This has to be one of my favorite LGBTQI films of the last several years. While the story may be rather simple, the characters are not. This film really seems to know who its characters are, and the actors dive in head-first (and have some pretty unbelievably realistic chemistry).

What I love most about this film, though, even above the deep performances, is the film's sense of place. So few films use the setting as much more than a backdrop. This film steeps itself in the nuance of the town it is set in. Its cinematography is amazing, but the customs, rituals, work opportunities and social opportunities (and limitations) of this place inform the characters and also provide a lot of the central conflict to the story (not because, as is true in many gay stories, the town is against them, but because they have different allegiances to the place and the idea of "home"). I finished the film wanting to visit, to see this place and know its people more fully. That is a gift so few movies bring to the table.

Finally, a word on that chemistry: These two actors were very brave (or in my fantasy, truly in love, perhaps). They did not hold back on the passion and emotion. The relationship was believable on a level that surprised me, because the actors went all in.
Physical desire and love on screen must be hard to play, as film is a craft and that level of intimacy can be hard to imitate (especially with a crew around and numerous takes). Somehow, though, the love and passion in this film almost feel as if nobody else was there when filming; and the director and actors deserve credit for that.

Again, loved this film and the world it is set in. I hope for more from all involved.

Reading the more negative review... Really? Deduct a point for lack of nudity and unconvincing sex? Silly in the first place and not really true in the second.

First off, the Filmography was perfect! Whoever said it was shaky must have been watching a different movie. The scenery was filmed perfectly and truly spectacular. I did not know the south of Chile was so amazing. The closeups were perfect, even in the truck which was having a rough ride; still the closeup was clear.
The acting was very well done, the main characters as well as the supporting actors, I felt like they really lived there and moreover; they actually felt what they said they felt. Even the grandmother seemed to really be his loving grandmother who takes care of everyone.
the subtitles were definitely written by a professional because they made sense. I can only imagine how much better it would have been if I spoke Spanish.
The romance was just enough to let you know it was more than a one night stand, and not enough to make you think it was XXX-Rated. the story flowed very well and all of the scenes blended together very well. this is a Beautiful Film on all accounts.

Los Fuertes is a stunning film, one of the best gay themed films since God's Own Country, sensitively, beautifully, movingly acted, wonderfully filmed, complex in the best ways, with a realism to it that makes it deeply resonant long after one has watched it.

The ending in many ways is sad, but one might speak of it as a necessary sadness, the love, even the passion felt between the two men so fully realized in the movie that what happens at the end is part of their strength, difficult as that is to say, their essential strength, why they are who they are. This itself gives the movie its own great strength, the strength, one might call it, of its realism, a realism that makes more profound everything that happens in it.

I will not detail it further, though I could, for example by exploring why the historical enactments in the movie matter to what it is about, place and the past bound together. Suffice it to say that I think this is one of the finest films about two men in love I have ever seen with depths in it worth pondering after many more viewings.

This movie has excellent picture, sound, soundtrack, story, acting, subtitles, and scenery. Just wonderful. Unfortunately, the director wasted it all. #1- With the exception of road scenes, the entire movie was filmed with a shoulder cam which is constantly bouncing around, even when the characters are not moving. Extremely distracting and annoying. #2- There are some evidently passionate lovemaking scenes, but we don't get to see it. Any gay movie with no nudity other than cliche' butt shots in this day and age is an insult. Deduct a star for filming, and deduct a star for unrealistic sex and lack of nudity. What a waste.

Over the last few years, we've been treated to several outstanding movies emanating from South America. This is another beautifully cast movie in a picturesque town in Chile. Like other movies before it (Undertow, The Blonde One, Taekwondo and Esteros just to name a few) this movie deeply connects on so many levels. I'd rather not divulge any specifics of the movie, as it's just a treat from start to finish. I will say that for a first time director, Omar Hidalgo put together a very cohesive and professional piece, eliciting such candor and authenticity from lead actors Samuel Gonzalez and Antonio Altamirano. Their connection throughout the movie is palpable! It's easy to see how their bond evolves so quickly. Set the story against a beautifully dark, cold and humid Chilean town near the ocean, and it's poetic. I would strongly recommend to anyone! And check out the aforementioned movies from South America if you need more viewing pleasure!
