About the Author

Richards J. Heuer Jr. is best known for his book Psychology of Intelligence Analysis and for developing and then guiding automation of the Analysis of Competing Hypotheses (ACH) technique. Both are being used to teach and train intelligence analysts throughout the Intelligence Community and in a growing number of academic programs on intelligence or national security. After retiring from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Mr. Heuer was associated with the Intelligence Community in various roles for more than five decades until his death in August 2018. He has written extensively on personnel security, counterintelligence, deception, and intelligence analysis. Mr. Heuer has a B.A. in philosophy from Williams College and an M.A. in international relations from the University of Southern California. He also pursued graduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Michigan.

Randolph H. Pherson is president of Pherson Associates, LLC; CEO of Globalytica, LLC; and a founding director of the nonprofit Forum Foundation for Analytic Excellence. He teaches advanced analytic techniques and critical thinking skills to analysts in the government and private sector. Mr. Pherson collaborated with Richards Heuer Jr. in developing and launching use of Analysis of Competing Hypotheses, and he developed several analytic techniques for the CIA’s Sherman Kent School, many of which were incorporated in his Handbook of Analytic Tools and Techniques. He coauthored Critical Thinking for Strategic Intelligence with Katherine Hibbs Pherson, Cases in Intelligence Analysis: Structured Analytic Techniques in Action with Sarah Miller Beebe, and several other guides for analysts on writing, briefing, indicators, and managing the production process. Mr. Pherson completed a twenty-eight-year career in the Intelligence Community in 2000, last serving as National Intelligence Officer (NIO) for Latin America. Previously at the CIA, Mr. Pherson managed the production of intelligence analysis on topics ranging from global instability to Latin America, served on the Inspector General’s staff, and was chief of the CIA’s Strategic Planning and Management Staff. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Intelligence Medal for his service as NIO and the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal. Mr. Pherson received his B.A. from Dartmouth College and an M.A. in international relations from Yale University.

I like the tabs but the spiral binding and flimsy cover ...
The binding is truly weird. I like the tabs but the spiral binding and flimsy cover are a disservice. Content wise though, it's great.

I picked up a really old version of this book from a library many years back, and after some struggle googling it figured this was the one. I agree with other reviewers regarding the cover size and style - its not that great and is pretty oversized. However, I had very low expectation from the reviews so it isnt bugging me as much as it probably would have. I was really looking forward to the spiral binding so its easy to flip the pages over. Its a bit offset by the overwhelming colors in the book. I'm going to guess a majority of readers are going to like that, but I guess I just like them old school.
Content wise, its pretty similar to what I recollect from the ancient version, so I am happy with that (so the 5 stars).

There is no question that the techniques contained inside this book are for, today’s analysts. While working many different and complex requests, analysts are expected to deliver the most plausible and best supported hypothesis. This new and updated book by Heuer and Pherson, is not only the perfect tool for this process, it greatly refines and externalizes one’s work and helps to answer the intelligence question at hand. The book is very organized and easy to read, and with its flip through tabs, it makes researching for the right analytical technique(s), quick and simple. Great work!

A very handy reference guide on various analytic techniques, conveniently organized by categories (e.g. Assessment of Cause and Effect, Conflict Management). Each technique provides a brief overview of origin, when to use, potential pitfalls of the technique, etc. The cover, as others have noted, is a bit clumsy, but the spiral binding does permit flat opening of the book. Recommended for those working in product/marketing, project management, competitive intelligence and similar roles.

This book has been a life safer for myself, and I highly recommend it to anyone working or seeking to work in the intelligence profession. The book helps to explain a multitude of complex and useful techniques that are not easily understood on a basic online course. This book is an outstanding read, with many very helpful and applicable. A must have for anyone working in the intel field.

The Condition of the book was not as good as described. It's in an "ok" Condition. It will do the job I want it for but I wouldn't recommend it.

Very good book. You find all the tools in a very systematical way. I did not put 5 stars just because I would like to have seen more examples for each technique.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dieses Buch gehört aus meiner Sicht auf den Schreibtisch jedes Analysten!
Reviewed in Germany on August 26, 2019
Beispielsweise Decomposition and Visualization oder Scenarios and Indicators.
