Editorial Reviews

After two highly acclaimed albums Tenth Avenue North takes a bold creative leap forward on its new album, The Struggle. Inviting fans all over the country to lend their voices to the process as they recorded this album in cities along its tour route, the songs explore themes of forgiveness, redemption and grace. "We really fostered the dance of both the music and the lyric while thematically unpacking the idea of what it means to struggle," says lead vocalist Mike Donehey. "We are free to struggle, but don't need to struggle to be free. It's about the permission to struggle but also a challenge not to stay there." With The Struggle, the band offers up lyrically substantive songs people have come to expect from Tenth Avenue North.

I've been following TAN for a few years now. Their heart for worshipping Jesus and the authenticity of their lyrics that reveal their own brokenness, of which I can identify with, has drawn me to their music. Their songs often remind me of how I am in desperate need of Jesus.

I've seen this band grow musically and spiritually. "The Struggle" is a work of art that showcases the talents of the new band members, Rueben and Brendon, while keeping the signature sounds and in-depth lyrics that the band is known for.

Highlights: "Worn", "Don't Stop The Madness", "You Do All Things Well", "Where Life Will Never Die"

I just started listening to Christian music extensively in the last couple of months. This CD is so soothing, spiritual, and to the heart. I like the way this group sounds, regardless of what type of genre of music they are categorized in. The song "Worn" makes me cry every time I hear it, it is a masterpiece. If you need to forgive someone in your life, listen to "Losing" and you will understand why the need to do that is necessary. The Lord God has blessed this group and along with Michael W Smith, they are my favorite Christian rock band.

The opening set of tracks are all among the best songs I've heard on any album in the past few years. From the beginning notes of "Shadows," I was hooked by the lyrical and musical intensity of the album. The opener kicks off the musical journey immediately relating to listeners, "We're born into the longing," which leads to the confessional chorus--"I've been running / chasing nothing but shadows / Oh Lord please come / raise my dead heart...You can keep me from chasing after the shadows." The great Brit-rock style guitar riffs are found throughout this substantive album. "The Struggle" has more vertical lyrics: "Why do I still give in to temptation...I will trust You, take You at Your Word." That leads to the freedom we can all proclaim as believers in the sincere chorus, "Hallelujah, we are free to struggle / we're not struggling to be free / Your blood bought it / makes us children / children drop your chains and sing." Amen!

I could say a million things about the CD...as far as lyrics, I'd say the scored extremely high. Worn and The Struggle are my favorite songs on this CD. The heartfelt lyrics really show where these guys stand. As far as music, you'll find the typical 'Tenth Avenue North' sound as before. If you're a CCM fan, you can't go wrong here.

If I could write a letter to Tenth Avenue North and they would actually read it, I would write this:

Dear Tenth Avenue North,

Thank you so much for not giving us another cliché, another pat answer, another song about how great being a Christian is and how we should just smile in the face of suffering. I'm not buying that music. I sometimes sit and listen to the words to your songs because that's all I can do. My hands are heavy and can't be lifted, my voice is weak and my heart hurting. I don't want to sing another bubble gum, happy song. Sometimes I want to sing a song that reminds me of the pain and why it is there. Sometimes I want a song to speak to this weak, hurting heart. So thank you for being the singers and writers of that song. Thank you for letting God use you to speak to my broken heart.

This CD has so many great lyrics. I downloaded the digital version of it and so I find myself looking up the words and really thinking about what they say. It's not often a song gets to me like the songs on this CD. Words like "We don't belong here, don't let us wander, into the arms of another" or "I'm tired, I'm worn..my heart is heavy, from the work it takes to keep on breathing...I've made mistakes, I've let my hope fail..I know that you can give me rest, so I cry out with all that I have left". I'm there. And these songs lift me to remember that God is with me even through the painful stuff. I recommend this CD to anyone struggling to feel like they fit in, or just grappling with pain in their lives. God is there and TAN reminds us of this through their lyrics and music.

This band is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Quality lyrics in spades on this album.

The first time that I heard "Worn" I played it back five or six songs. It's become my go to song when I just feel like I can't take anymore of life. I love this song so much. It's a real cry your heart out to God and ask him to help song, for when you don't know how to express just how much you need Him. It's cathartic to know that you're not alone. You're not the only one who feels this way. Take solace in God.
