Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In this story about one girl’s battle with the blues, her feelings are anthropomorphized into a giant blue blob named Blooz. He’s got limbs, a bulbous nose, and is wearing what appears to be an old-fashioned striped swimming costume. You weren’t invited, the little girl says to Blooz, but he doesn’t care and proceeds to dribble into her glass of chocolate milk and trickle into her socks. The girl asks Blooz many questions to ascertain his raison d’être—everything from Did somebody forget your birthday? to Is your best purple crayon broken? But when the girl and Blooz do some fun things together, the sadness starts to lift and, before long, Blooz is heading off into the clear—well, blue—sky. Davis’ soft illustrations use plenty of white space and effectively bring a child’s internal struggles into focus. Blooz may be a blob, and he may be uninvited, but he is actually kinda cute, which makes this a nonthreatening tool for discussing negative emotions with young children. Grades K-3. --Ann Kelley

Review

"The process of understanding emotion, especially for young children, can be overwhelming and abstract--the Blooz just might be the perfect concrete visual to help everyone get through those cranky days."
Kirkus

"Debut author Levis has an impressively light touch."
Publishers Weekly

"Blooz may be a blob, and he may be uninvited, but he is actually kinda cute, which makes this a nonthreatening tool for discussing negative emotions with young children."
Booklist

"Children will identify with her feelings in this tale, and it will have value as a springboard for discussing sadness and how to work through it."

TBT I'm unsure about how to rate this book. On one hand, I like the insightfulness with which the author deals with depression (make no mistake--this book is not about 'that bummed feeling everybody feels on some days' or having that 'down-in-the dumps-day'--it's about a child who has a history of depression and is shown in the throes of it, battling with it, dealing with it, embracing it and eventually overcoming it....for the moment). For the same reason, I'm not sure that it is a suitable book for a young child unless he/she is known to be suffering from depression because the book is depressing for all its happy ending. It strikes a pang of deepest grief in my heart everytime I read about the child asking the Blooz about his mother. Where is the child's mother? Why has she been left all to herself in dealing with the Blooz? The plight of this lonely, depressed girl is heartbreaking to anyone who has suffered depression arising from parental neglect in childhood. If 'deal-with-your demon' was the palliative for depression, then there would be no suicide. What that little protagonist needs is love from another human if she is ever going to part company for good with the Blooz. Love, love and love alone is the cure, if any at all.

Stuck with the Blooz doesn't pander to kids or adults. It's an honest exploration of what it means to feel sad --- a feeling that is sometimes complicated for little kids to sort out. And the book is crafted in a way that doesn't make feeling blue a negative thing at all, rather, it presents the idea of how to live with the "blooz" and love the "blooz" and be grateful when he leaves. How clever to embody the feeling of being blue in a giant, adorable creature! I've given this book to many friends with children and their kids have really loved it. The illustrations are also really beautiful. A really beautiful book.

"I love that book!" is what my four-year-old friend declared when I gave him his own copy of Stuck with the Blooz. After reading it three consecutive times, we spent the rest of the afternoon flying paper airplanes and painting. Not only does the text of this beautiful book inspire great laughter and offer thoughtful philosophy, the story and images also provoke curiosity, creativity, and a warm sense of peace.

"Is the blooz real?" one of my students asked a few days after I read this book to my second grade classroom of learners with special needs. He'd clearly been pondering it over! Time and time again students would revisit the Blooz on their own in our classroom library, looking carefully of the pictures and enjoying the story on their own.

Stuck With the Blooz creates a non-threatening way to bring up sadness and what we do when the blooz comes along. A great read!

This is a whimsical story which gracefully captures the 'bummed out' feeling that life inevitably brings from time to time. It shows a child that he or she is in good company if they are ever having a tough day. Very playful language, and the illustrations are utterly charming. Great addition to any child's library!
