About the Author

The Edwin Earle Sparks Professor of Slavic Languages and General Linguistics The Pennsylvania State University - retired 2002.

In 1964, Schmalstieg came to Penn State as an associate professor of Slavic languages and in 1967, was advanced to the rank of professor. He served as acting head of the Department of Slavic Languages from 1965 to 1969 and as head from 1969 until 1991.

Schmalstieg was a member of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities, awarded the Faculty Scholar's Medal in 1983 and recognized by the University of Kaunas, Lithuania, which awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1994.
