About the Author

Paul Blanchard is Associate Professor of Mathematics at Boston University. Paul grew up in Sutton, Massachusetts, spent his undergraduate years at Brown University, and received his Ph.D. from Yale University. He has taught college mathematics for twenty-five years, mostly at Boston University. In 2001, he won the Northeast Section of the Mathematical Association of America's Award for Distinguished Teaching in Mathematics. He has coauthored or contributed chapters to four different textbooks. His main area of mathematical research is complex analytic dynamical systems and the related point sets, Julia sets and the Mandelbrot set. Most recently his efforts have focused on reforming the traditional differential equations course, and he is currently heading the Boston University Differential Equations Project and leading workshops in this innovative approach to teaching differential equations. When he becomes exhausted fixing the errors made by his two coauthors, he usually closes up his CD store and heads to the golf course with his caddy, Glen Hall.

Robert L. Devaney is Professor of Mathematics at Boston University. Robert was raised in Methuen, Massachusetts. He received his undergraduate degree from Holy Cross College and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He has taught at Boston University since 1980. His main area of research is complex dynamical systems, and he has lectured extensively throughout the world on this topic. In 1996 he received the National Excellence in Teaching Award from the Mathematical Association of America. When he gets sick of arguing with his coauthors over which topics to include in the differential equations course, he either turns up the volume of his opera CDs, or heads for waters off New England for a long distance sail.

Glen R. Hall is Associate Professor of Mathematics at Boston University. Glen spent most of his youth in Denver, Colorado. His undergraduate degree comes from Carleton College and his Ph.D. comes from the University of Minnesota. His research interests are mainly in low-dimensional dynamics and celestial mechanics. He has published numerous articles on the dynamics of circle and annulus maps. For his research he has been awarded both NSF Postdoctoral and Sloan Foundation Fellowships. He has no plans to open a CD store since he is busy raising his two young sons. He is an untalented, but earnest, trumpet player and golfer. He once bicycled 148 miles in a single day.

The book is about high level mathematics....it is not an easy course. At least for me, who took off a year of any math/physics. The book does well with working through problems; however, I wish it had more worked through problems. That being said, I recommend getting the solutions manual. The end of chapter problems are very helpful and go in order of increasing difficulty and 'ambiguity' so to speak. Some examples were posed in the form of theory and that is very convoluted.

READ the math book. IT HELPS. I can't tell you how many in my class skipped straight to the end for homework problems and just didn't do well. Concepts are there. As I always say with any book, look for similarities and differences within the chapter. Ask why the publishers put a section together. It will help your mind group the math you encounter. The different ways of solving the ODE is presented and taken up a notch within each chapter. Similarities are within each chapter. Do the end of chapter problems but use common sense; some are the same mechanisms to get the answer, just different numbers. Other times, it may look similar but it will be a trick. If you know how to spot those, you should know how to solve them too!

The textbook that corresponds to this is certainly not the worst math book I have come across, but it is not great by any means. The authors did not put in a lot of boxed formulas and equations, and at times want it to almost read like a novel, with the recurring story line of two math professors opening competing shops that goes throughout the book. This can, at times, make it hard to figure out just what you are supposed to be focusing on. It also uses some linear algebra concepts when it gets into solving systems of differential equations. It does try to teach you the linear algebra material you need to know, but it was not always as clear as the explanation you would get in a linear algebra book.

My professor did not really follow the book's format, and kind of taught the material in his own way. Thankfully that was more clear than the book, but did however make doing homework problems from the book difficult sometimes (which is why I got this). Obviously if you have to buy the textbook for class you do not have a choice, but you may want to look at some of the differential equations and linear algebra supplements out there if you do need to use this one.

As for the solution manual itself it is pretty standard. It has the solutions to the odd problems. It walks you through the steps, and thankfully, unlike many solution manuals does not skip a lot of steps. When they do, it is something that is really basic that a student taking differential equations should be able to follow.

Not sure if the author is aware of this, but the original textbook has all of the answers to the odd-numbered problems, this book is just a slight improvement on that in that it has somewhat more explanations to the answers to the odd-numbered problems. That is the problem, what about the even-numbered problems?! I paid $85 with the obviously bad assumption that this book was the solutions manual to all of the problems, not half. This is especially frustrating on the odd-numbered problems that are related to the previous even-numbered problem. So I have difficulty with the even-numbered problem, it will be difficult to answer the odd-numbered problem. Very dissapointed.

I wrote a more detailed review of the textbook, please read that one as well.

This manual is necessary to understand the textbook. It does not show every odd problem nore every step in solving the problems, it does give you a little more detail than the text. And from this extra detail, I was able to deduce and back-track my way through problems to determine the steps to get to their particular solutions.

I will warn you. There are several errors in this book, so if you are having difficulty in determining where the graphs came from or how they wound up with a certain nonsense answer, you are not going crazy. The answer in the text is probably wrong. I found most of them so far are in chapter 3.

If the text is mandatory, get this book as well. It has more of the steps with a minimal amount of fluff.

A straightforward solutions manual that provides the answers to the book's edition. I like the solution manual, but there is definitely a lacking in explanation. Every problem gives a pretty good step-by-step process for the answers, but when the denser material comes in, the problems assume you learned 100% of everything and don't explain much. Could definitely use more worded explanation and teaching of how to get the answers to the problems.

I love it! This book is helping me so much survive my summer class. However, don't expect it to make the class easy. You still have to think and practice if you want to do well. It just tells you if you got the answer right or not.
