About the Author

Randy Knight has taught introductory physics for 25 years at Ohio State University and California Polytechnic University, where he is currently Professor of Physics and Director of the Minor in Environmental Studies. Randy received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics before joining the faculty at Ohio State University. It was at Ohio State, under the mentorship of Professor Leonard Jossem, that he began to learn about the research in physics education that, many years later, led to Five Easy Lessons: Strategies for Successful Physics Teaching and this book. Randy's research interests are in the field of lasers and spectroscopy. When he's not in the classroom or in front of a computer, you can find Randy hiking, sea kayaking, playing the piano, or spending time with his wife Sally and their seven cats.

I bought this manual because i had a terrible college physics teacher and needed some extra guidance to complete the homework. I had previously purchased a solutions manual only once for a textbook, that was for precalculus. That book worked through every problem in the book, step-by-step, in a clear and helpful manner. It was a wonderful help and pretty much taught me the material instead of my then also terrible instructor. This book was a let down for a few reasons:

1. The manual only covers half of the textbook. You have to buy another equally thin manual for the later half of the book. The publisher needlessly broke the manual into two thin volumes to squeeze more money out of students.

2. The manual only covers SOME problems. Less than half. This was problematic because, although the authors say they selected one of each TYPE of problem, this really wasn't true or very helpful. I had a few homework assignments where the manual did not help with a single one of the problems.

3. The manual's step-by-step instructions were seldom clear. The calculations skipped steps, and the explanations were weak and confusing.

Overall the manual was some help. It did usually help me with the problems that it included, but not always. It was useful, but not very, and certainly not worth $30 (or $60 if you buy both volumes). It's unfortunate that the popular textbook College Physics has such a weak manual, especially considering the rarity of effective physics teachers. I would not recommend this manual. Reading the chapters and referring to the examples provides about as much help, and at no additional cost.

Nowhere nearly enough of the solutions. No solutions to the even numbered problems, and around 2/3 of the odd numbered problems. This is unacceptable!

If you google the problem you're working on there's tons of sites like Yahoo Answers that have the solutions worked out like in this book.
I was doing that, but decided to buy the solutions manual to save time and get more trusted, concrete, specialized solutions.

I really regret that because I'll go to look up a solution and it isn't even included!
So they've omitted solutions to all the even problems, all the problems in Volume 2, and a few random ones! It doesn't matter if the problem is ranked hard or easy, they just decided to not include some for reason.

I guess the redeemable qualities are that it's useful (but not any more than google) to have a physical book when you're able to actually make use of it, and they include illustrations which help during chapter 5's force diagrams. I'd only buy it if it were ~$10.

This book does not provide answers to every odd-numbered problem from the textbook. For example, they don't explain the multiple choice problems at the end of the chapters. If they think problems are similar (even though they are not really), the book will do one example and then skip the rest. The point of a solution manual is to show students how to do problems that they don't know how to do, but this book does not do a good job explaining answers. The authors do an okay job explaining the problems that they actually have but they often will skip steps. There are errors in how to solve problems so be careful.

Overall, this book can be helpful but is expensive (since you need to buy 2 for the entire textbook) and could be greatly improved.
