This book is probably the best one-volume resource on elementary Japanese grammar ever written. Okay, maybe that's a bit hyperbolic. But if Makino and Tsutsui's Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar is the undisputed gold standard, Prof. McGloin has still given students (who have completed at least one year of college Japanese) a truly useful companion text.

The genius of the book is that it works through comparison of similar grammatical structures. For example, one section compares tara, ba, to, and nara (all of which may denote conditional clauses, but each of which has particular rules of usage that are easily confused). Another section compares rashii and yo (long 'o'), while another compares koto and no in nominalizing expressions. Since I don't think the display picture on Amazon is of the "look inside" variety, I will give some further section titles here:

~mae ni v.s. ~nai uchi ni
~aida ni v.s. ~uchi ni
~tame ni v.s. ~yoo ni
~te iru v.s. ~te aru
~to (conditional/temporal) v.s. ~toki
~naide v.s. ~nakute

And so forth. There are 50 sections like this; if you just want to brush up on grammar, or are currently in a second-year or higher Japanese course, try to pick up a copy of this text. If the used prices are too much (some used books on Amazon can get ridiculously expensive), I'd say check with your library.
