Editorial Reviews
THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1989-2007 features every studio album Rush recorded for Atlantic Records. The collection includes the Gold & Platinum albums Presto (1989), Roll The Bones (1991), Counterparts (1993), and Test For Echo (1996), as well as their covers EP Feedback (2004) and the Billboard Top 5 album Snakes & Arrows (2007). THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1989-2007 features each album presented in a wallet sleeve that faithfully reproduces the original artwork (except for VAPOR TRAILS, which features a reinterpreted version of the original cover)
The collection also includes the highly anticipated release of a remixed version of the band's 2002 album VAPOR TRAILS. In 2009, two tracks from VAPOR TRAILS (“One Little Victory” and “Earthshine”) were remixed for the Retrospective III collection, setting fans into a frenzy in anticipation of a possible remixed version of the entire album being released one day. Four years later, that day is finally approaching!
"Vapor Trails was an album made under difficult and emotional circumstances - sort of like Rush learning how to be Rush again - and as a result, mistakes were made that we have longed to correct. David Bottrill's remixes have finally brought some justice and clarity to this deserving body of our work,” says Geddy Lee. "Every song has been given a new life, from the fire of ‘One Little Victory,’ ‘Secret Touch,’ and ‘Ceiling Unlimited’ to the melodic musicality of ‘Sweet Miracle’ and ‘How It Is’… these songs have been redeemed. Thank you David!"

When I first got wind that Rush would be updating their Atlantic Records catalog, I was at first reluctant on upgrading to this box set fearing that the remasters would not be as good as what Adam Ayan did in 2004 and Howie Weinberg, Bernie Grundman did with the albums from Vapor Trails onwards but since I've been a Rush fan for many years, I could not pass this boxed set up nd purchased on the day it was released. This box set does a great job capturing remastered versions of Rush's post-Mercury Records era studio albums in one set.
The albums in this fourth Rush boxed set of studio album are the band's seven studio albums for Atlantic Records (the 1989 Top 20 classic Presto, 1991's Top 5 million seller Roll the Bones, 1993's #2 charting masterpiece Counterparts, 1996's Top 5 charting Test For Echo, 2002's Vapor Trails now completely Remixed (see review), 2004's Top 20 mini-album Feedback and the 2007 Top 5 classic Snakes and Arrows). What's cool about this boxed set is that all of the albums are packaged in quazi-vinyl sleeves so it's just like buying the vinyl albums (which most were not released on vinyl initially in the US sans Presto, Vapor Trails, Feedback and Snaked and Arrows) and the remastering job done by Andy Vandette at Masterdisk in 2013 initially for iTunes then on this incredible box set.
I don't need to rehash the reviews of these seven albums again (if you want my opinion read the reviews of each one) but what I can say is that the sonic quality on this box set is incredible. The alternate remix of Vapor Trails is superior to the original mix and also seeing Feedback on CD again after it was discontinued in 2006 is a sight for sore eyes and ears and the two major reasons why I grabbed this set and sold my individual CDs of the album in this set once this came in the mail.
Also, the packaging is incredible with the miniature vinyl sleeves plus a booklet with lyrics to all of the tracks, only gripe is that it doesn't contain band photos nor the pictures that were on the original albums nor picture labels as they were on vinyl but the remastering done by Andy VanDette is superb and makes the Adam Ayan masters and Howie Weinberg look like they did not ever occur IMHO!
The Studio Albums 1989-2007 boxed set (like the three previous Sector box sets released by Mercury Records) by Rush is a must own and if you want to replace your 2004 remasters and/or original CD versions released by Atlantic during the 1989-2007 timeframe, then I say go for it.
RECOMMENDED!
What I will review is the packaging and quality of the set.
Going into this purchase it was very unclear whether these would be remastered, until the final word came that they were indeed remastered. I can confirm this - and the remasters do exactly what they say they will do - make these albums a little more mp3 player friendly. They don't sound radically different from the previously remastered CDs, but they have a slightly different sound stage and some definite areas that are cleaner. I won't review the differences in each and every album, as they are pretty subtle to my ears, but overall listening in the car on an mp3 player does sound better in a side by side comparison does sound better to the original releases.
Worth mentioning is the Vapor Trails Remixed album, which others have given exhaustive reviews to. It is a much different, more accessible recording now and can now be enjoyed fully than the original.
The packaging of this set falls a bit short, but this is understandable because of the price of the set. The album covers are faithfully reproduced as miniature album jackets. However, the liner notes are condensed into a single nondescript booklet without and frills - just lyrics and credits - no stories, amusing anecdotes, Jack Black tributes, etc.
All in all a very good set at an excellent price with a bonus of being remastered and sounding better in the car. Your mileage may vary.
I'd have given it five stars if the album liner notes were intact and they'd have given sleeves to the discs rather than just the cardboard sleeves, but overall it's worth the money for the casual and hardcore Rush fan alike.

You cannot deny the talent of Rush.
A 3 piece legendary band that has survived
and out lived more supergroups known to man...ok, maybe not the Rolling Stones then.
Every tune has that distinct Rush sound.
I thought I had heard every song that they had produced and immortalised in vinyl.
Not so.. this is there studio albums from 1989 to 2007 so none of their more
reknown albums like..
"2112" "Moving pictures" "A farewell to kings" etc... Apart from that, this boxed set
makes the grade with the "Feedback" covers album alone imo. Not that many gems, but enough to compliment your
existing Rush collection. A steal really.
I can remember the amazing amount of pedals that bass and lead guitar went through. that made this 3 piece sound like a rock orchestra. at the Empire, and the deep thud of the bass through the venues floor that nearly knocked you over, and stopped your heart..Also the mammoth drum kit..and the drummer with the cavalier moustache.
Well any chance of reseeing them live again, has now sadly gone with Neil's death. But they do leave behind them a wealth of material for fans new and old to get into,or back into..this 7 cd set appart from neing staggerringly great value.more or less brings me up to date..and I look forward to hammering the volume on the cd player..
At last I will be able to hear the sound closer to what it was meant to sound like ,as the vinyl, though good never did have the dynamic range..
I decided to purchase this box set of 7 CD’s after reading the many positive reviews , but was worried I would play a few of the cd’s, think ‘none of them are a patch on the 70’s and early 80’s Rush albums’ then put the whole box set in a drawer and forget about it.....
However i am still playing all the CD’s from this box set and enjoying each and every one. The ‘later’ Rush have moved on from the early 80’s but then bands who have staying power need to do just that.
So I won’t do reviews of each album, as many reviewers on this page have already done so in greater detail than I could. My favorite from the box set so far is Roll The Bones, closely followed by Test For Echo. It’s a real treat to play
7 albums I have never heard before from one of my favorite bands. So I absolutely give this Box set 5 stars.
My all time favorite Rush album is still Hemispheres but if you are an ‘early’ Rush fan, do not pass this box set by.
RIP Neil.
Anyway this box set was an ideal chance to catch up on their later years. So glad I got this as there is a great deal of excellent rock music here. Counterparts, Test For Echo, Feedback and Snakes and Arrows have all been listened to many times. Vapor Trails, Presto and Roll The Bones are all less accessible so far. Still think the later '80s Rush is beyond reach but this set, for any similar doubters, is highly recommended!
