Editorial Reviews

Review

For many quilters, the quilting is secondary to the piecing of the quilt top. In her second book, Walters makes a strong argument for the importance of quilting to make beautiful patchwork shine. The focus of this book is quilting negative space—the large expanses of solid fabric often used in modern quilting. With a selection of projects as well as samples from her other work, Walters demonstrates a variety of techniques for quilting negative space to enhance the design of quilt tops. VERDICT Like her first book, the style is friendly and pleasant, and Walters’s gentle guidance will help increase quilters’ confidence in their machine-quilting abilities.
(Library Journal, 11/15/12)

Angela Walters has taken the Modern Quilt world by storm! She shares her secrets for using machine quilting to give a quilt dimension, depth, contrast and movement here in her second technique/design book. Using quilts of differing styles as examples, Angela shows how the design of the quilting can enhance and bring out the personality of each piece. Ten patterns and instructions for quilting projects are given, complete with machine quilting suggestions tailored for each one. (Machine Quilting Unlimited, March/April 2013 Issue)

Under Walters' friendly tutelage, discover how to evaluate a quilt top and design quilting that will accentuate it best. Each of the 10 fun projects address different quilting concepts and techniques, from telling a story to adding movement, dimension, texture, contrast and details. Learn how to create dense background patterns and when to let the piecing speak for itself. (Quilters Newsletter, 3/14/13)

Angela shares great tips and techniques in this book to plan and execute beautiful custom quilting. She does this by demonstrating her techniques on 10 projects, along the way walking you through the process of planning and quilting each one. (Australian Quilters Companion, Summer 2013)

I am always looks for new or more information about machine quilting…new techniques, more designs…anything to improve my quilting. A while back I had reviewed a book Free Motion Quilting with Angela Walters. I loved the book and have even tried a few of the designs. Then I saw that C&T Publishing had another book written by Angela so I had to check In the Studio with Angela Walters out too. My dream would be able to machine quilt like she does. Her work is just amazing. I can see myself trying a few of her machine quilting techniques. I have to say, I LOVE the machine quilting. It’s just gorgeous! (Jo's Country Junction, 11/25/13)

In The Studio with Angela Walters furthers Angela’s belief that quilting can add another layer of art to the quilt. Each quilt tells a story and you can enhance that story with the quilt designs you choose to use. Learn how to capture the feel of movement or give the illusion of layers and depth. Add texture with thread color or emphasize the piecing of the blocks. This book also has 10 quilt projects along with a commentary on each quilt design and how the quilting is used to tell the story of the quilt. Angela’s machine-quilting design concepts add movement, contrast, depth and more to a quilt. Planning, sketching and practice are the keys to Angela’s success and you too can learn to use these methods. Angela says that these methods work for her. They may or may not be the best for you. 'If you come across an idea you don’t love, tweak it a bit to make it your own!' (The Applique Society Newsletter, July/August 2014)

I absolutely love Angela Walter's first book, and I recommend it to every quilter I know. Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed in this book. I was hoping for more free motion quilting ideas and tips - perhaps a more advanced version of the second book?
This book includes patterns for creating quilt tops and tips for quilting them. I don't typically follow a pattern, although I do appreciate the inspiration I get from them. And while I like the quilting tips, all of the quilting designs used in this book are the designs that were introduced in the first book.
There are many quilters out there who will love and benefit from this book, and I will still recommend it to those who I feel will enjoy it. Perhaps I was just not the target audience for this book.

Angela's book is the best book on quilting I have ever read, and I own a lot of books. The chapters each have a focus such as "Quilting Fills in the Details", Quilting Provides Contrast" and "Quilting Supplies Texture". Each chapter begins with a definition of its topic. "Texture...the way a quilt actually feels...or how it visually "feels" when you look at it." She continues with tips for great texture and discussion of what texture looks like. Finally there is a project to use the ideas you have learned. Her descriptions are brief and thorough.

Another thing that makes this book really special are the drawings from Angela's sketchbook, that let you understand her design process. The drawings are lovely, and make the book worth owning. The quilt examples in the book are modern quilting at its finest.

This is the only book you will ever need to learn to use machine quilting to take your quilt from nice to amazing!

I love Angela Walters. I loved the first book. This is more conceptual and great for newer free motion quilters. With so many years experience, I don't really need the concepts. The projects are neat if you are looking to enter the modern quilt arena. As always, her explanations are clear, well diagrammed and an enjoyable "chat" with a talented quilter.

This book is perfect for the modern quilting that the designs are simple and straight forward. The pics are clear and the narratives are easy to follow. The designs are doable, even for the novice. I use the book as a reference tool each time I'm designing the quilting portion of the overall process. I like quilting that complements the quilt top design rather than becoming the dominant feature. I highly recommend this book and look forward to Angela's next work.

My copy of this book is already becoming worn and tattered, a sure sign that this book is loved. Thank you Angela for delivering quilters from feathers, feathers, plumes, and more feathers (yawn) This book breaks you from the mold of traditional quilting that is stilted, and frozen inside the borders of predictability.

Buy this book, and come fly with Angela away from frozen images. Beautiful quilts can be made using these ideas. Also, we need more 'modern' and contemporary quilting ideas to get inspiration from. This is the 21st century, and Angela Walters will be a leader!

Angela Walters covers the concepts behind her decisions to use a particular design for a quilt, not just quilting designs. This has given me a better way to approach my decision about what quilting design to choose for a particular quilt. This is not just another book of quilting designs and how to stitch them. This book has excellent concepts.

I absolutely love Angela and her quilting. I have both of her books and have all of her classes on craftsy. She is great to watch and so good at what she does. I have watched her videos several times already and reference the books for ideas as well.
