Product Description
From the Manufacturer
Speed is what you need for video editing, big design projects, or managing photo shoots, and that's what the Western Digital WDH1Q5000N My Book Studio Edition 500 GB external hard drive delivers, with FireWire 800 and eSATA connectivity. With its automatic backup capability, My Book Studio Edition backs up your creative masterpieces the minute you save them.
My Book Studio Edition is easy to set up and easy to use. Installation is a snap because you don't really install this drive, you just plug it in and it's ready to use. There is no CD to install; the included software loads from the drive the first time you plug it in.
By using the automatic backup, you can back up important projects to multiple destinations including file servers, portable drives, and My Book. You can use it to synchronize project files to keep them current and secure. Set it and forget it; every time you save a change it's automatically backed up.
The quad interface system provides flexibility and performance with connections for ultra-fast eSATA, FireWire 400 and 800, and USB 2.0. The eSATA interface gives you speed comparable to a state-of-the-art internal hard drive, while the FireWire connection delivers a high-performance interface that is perfect for Macintosh computers. USB 2.0 is also available for convenience and compatibility among multiple computers.
My Book Studio Edition takes no more space than a paperback book. Collect two or more and they nest neatly together like volumes on a shelf. This external hard drive also turns itself on and off with your computer, while Safe Shutdown prevents the drive from being powered down until all your data has been written. (Works with the USB and FireWire connection only.)
This drive is designed to save power by going into standby mode after 10 minutes of inactivity. When you're ready to use it, it wakes up automatically. My Book enclosure's heat-dissipating design with Morse Code also prevents heat buildup, a notorious data killer. How cool is that?
The My Book Studio Edition is backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

I also purchased a W.D. 1 TB My Book Mac edition that I have partitioned and I use to backup both the Mac hard drive and the WD studio edition external drive. When my Lacie crashed, it was a wake up call to back up everything. Both units have worked perfectly since installing.
I don't have "Time Machine" because I am running the Tiger 10.4 OS. I don't feel a need to upgrade to leopard at this time. I use "Super Duper" software to complete my backups and everything is working great.
There is a firmware update out that may be needed for your drive, so check the WD support site. Firmware installation was very easy.
This drive is not fast enough to deliver HD video via FW800 for smooth playback; 720p works okay, but definitely a no-go for 1080p. eSata connection might work, but I haven't tried that. Look into some flavor of G-Drive for editing.
I also have a new WD My Passport for essential MacBook Pro backups. No erratic behavior yet, but I have to be highly suspicious...
Six months after buying the My Book, I've sent it back for replacement, but I surely won't use it for anything other than a back-up for my other dependable back-ups. Or perhaps a nice bookend. Just. Say. No.
Before you start using it, do the following:
1) Go to the WD site and download and install the proper firmware update. The detailed instructions make it seem complicated to do, but it's really not. Just follow the steps exactly.
2) Use Disk Utility to format (reformat?) the drive in GUID.
3) And, despite the lousy manual's vagueness, make sure you connect the drive thusly: With the drive's power cord out, the Mac off, and the FW cable disconnected, boot the Mac. Plug in the My Book's power cord. Connect the FW cable first to the Mac, then to the My Book's port. The icon should show up on your desktop. It does on mine, every time. And it stays there if I restart the Mac.
Now, I have no idea how well my drive will work over time. So far, the speed and quiet of the fanless drive is really nice. Time Machine works like a charm. And, contrary to other folks' experience, I found WD's phone support to be just fine. But it's really fussy about FW connections (though not USB), and I docked it a star simply for WD's not fully explaining how to get a Mac to recognize the drive.
EDIT: Shortly after I posted the above, the My Book went back to not mounting, or disappearing from the desktop, when connected via FW 800, but working just fine via FW 400 and USB. Obviously, the My Book's FW ports worked. Was it the iMac's port? A software glitch? After much gnashing of teeth, I went after the most obvious possible weak link - the connecting cable, which had plugs that seemed less nice than the plugs on the FW 400 cable. (And which I remembered someone else complaining about somewhere online.) I phoned WD's tech support, they sent out a new cable gratis, and bingo, FW 800's back in business...at least for now. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
EDIT ON THE EDIT: Several months later, it's been working almost flawlessly. (Well, every once in a while, Time Machine is unable to complete backup, but trying again manually always succeeds, so I have no idea whether or not the drive is the issue.) I'd definitely raise the star rating if Amazon would let me, but....
