Thankfully I am not required to use photo flood bulbs with this Studio Hut light stand like with my Smith Victor light mounts and the internals for the Studio Hut appear made better with more metal. It is great that regular BR120Watt or equivalent flood bulbs work on this light mount but beware you will not get the same lumens using BR bulbs but I find they are bright enough for my purpose, spotting, backlighting the background or as a focus light for the camera and using BR bulbs last days longer with regular use, BR bulbs are studier, are much cheaper than photo floods and I can pick them up from my local hardware store.

I do have a slight gripe though with this light mount. The umbrella mount/holder is a bit large in diameter inside for all my various umbrella shafts so they wobble, some more than others. This gripe would be less only if the screw mounted to secure the umbrella shafts was sturdier (larger diameter) or was mounted more toward the center rather than at one end of the mount itself...Yes, this would make the screw harder to get at to tighten or loosen your umbrella but it would perform its function a lot better so the umbrellas would stay where you put it easier.

I am looking to buy at least one more in the future and would consider buying this one even with its deficiencies if I cannot find one engineered better at a similar price point.

This light set makes it much easier to take portraits on a budget. Earlier posts say that the umbrella holder is too big, but either they fixed it, or someone was using a mighty small umbrella. I think they fixed it with the little metal spring clip. Anyway, it works great for me. I like the fact that I can adjust the angles of the lights independently. This allows for some creativity in lighting. As with all light mounts, the cord is a little short, though.

There isn't much way you can mess up a bulb socket. But, that being said, I would have liked it if this setup was a bit easier to adjust. One side won't adjust by loosening the thumb screw. You have to loosen both side to the point of coming apart and then hold it right where you want it as you reassemble it and tighten it down.

I use these with a couple of light stands and umbrellas to provide continuous lighting for videos. These work very well. I really like having a separate power switch on each socket. The only thing holding me back from giving them 5 stars is that it can be a little awkward to adjust them. As someone else mentioned, both sides have a set knob and you have to manipulate both knobs together to adjust the angle of the umbrella and each light socket. It would be easier with 5 hands (one for each light socket, the umbrella, and each tension knob.

Aside from that, these are pretty decent light mounts.

Add couple of extra bucks and buy another product. I tried to save money and learned that lesson again - what you pay, what you get- or vice versa. I bought two of these for my two light-stands. I knew these are cheap and fragile units- even with very careful use - plastic tightening part which attach to the light-stand broke. One had loose light thread from the beginning , it just rolls and rolls - you can not tighten the bulb to attachment, now it completely gave up- would not light the light bulb.

I have the single holder and now the double-bulb holder. There's no fooling yourself that these are entry-level quality the plastic itself even feels low quality. That said they do exactly what they should do. Hold 2 bulbs, they have enough spacing to hold 2 huge 300w equiv. spiral CFLs. The adjustment locks are a little clunky but once locked in (don't screw them down too hard) they stay where you put them. Nice long power cords on these also.

For anyone like myself exploring non-flash based studio lighting setups. Parts like these are a great way to have some options without spending a lot of money. Couple of these and some inexpensive brolly boxes or umbrellas and you have a cool (almost no heat) constant lighting setup that you can move around on a couple stands to really visualize how light changes on your subject(s) without learning curve of speed lights until your ready to tackle that.

I think if they had charged a couple more dollars, they could have made a much better product. When you loosen the nut to position the sockets, both the sockets and the bar they are attached to spin. It's really just the one nut's friction/tension keeping it all in place, so when you undo it the whole thing is loosened. The sockets are spaced far enough apart to hold two super-big (i.e. 85 watt) lightbulbs, and sufficiently capable of powering them. The insulation on the cable is crappy feeling plastic, but again, works fine. Biggest issue here is that the screw that would a photo umbrella/softbox in place is badly positioned, and the whole for the stem too big. This means that the umbrella is held in crooked, which is not a big deal unless you're using a particularly small modifier. Also, because the whole thing isn't under a lot of tension, if you don't put the umbrella right up against the bulbs, the whole light will gradually sag under the umbrella's (inconsiderable) weight.

Nothing about this thing is bad, but I grudgingly give it 4 stars. As my mother says, "Bread and water can so easily be tea and toast."
