A TV writer and a banker try to return priceless diamonds to their rightful owners while neo-Nazi dealers in stolen merchandise pursue them in this romantic suspense novel.
Hallelujah Weiss is facing a bitter divorce--just like Pollyanna "Polly" Winthrop, the protagonist on the soap opera As the Planet Spins, for which she writes. Determined to spend as much of her philandering husband's money as possible before he marries his secretary, Hallelujah boards a flight to Florence, Italy. Her friendly, attractive seatmate, Alexander Stone, hands her a package and then disappears for the rest of the flight. They finally meet again in Rome, and Hallelujah soon finds herself following the hedge fund trader to Switzerland to uncover the mystery of the diamonds in the package he gave her. It turns out that Alexander had discovered them hidden in his newly purchased home in Berlin. On his property, an unknown benefactor had placed plaques, or "stumble stones," commemorating the original owners, the Hirschfeld family, who were sent to Auschwitz in 1943. Unbeknownst to Hallelujah and Alexander, a Hirschfeld survivor had a son with the SS officer who arrested the family; now, that son is a Nazi sympathizer who's after the diamonds. Along the way, the story intersperses snippets of Hallelujah's TV scripts, which she continues to write. As she's pursued by modern-day dealers in art and jewels stolen from Holocaust victims, she tries to act as the fearless, vivacious Pollyanna would while also resisting falling in love with Alexander. One may simply count the romance-genre tropes--travel, a handsome stranger, a mystery package, an innocent embroiled in international intrigue, and a writer living vicariously through more colorful characters--and be able to predict most of this story. The dialogue and exposition are repetitive, as if scenes are following commercial breaks, and the Pollyanna segues further slow the pace. However, Baron (Sixth Sense, 2015, etc.) does make a few poignant points about how the international community looked away as lower-echelon Nazis remained free to sell treasures stolen from Jewish families and about how a Holocaust survivor's appetite for vengeance has unintended consequences for the next generation.
A romance with a clichéd premise but some political and emotional depth.

Alexander Stone has moved back to Germany to discover his roots and work in a German hedge fund business. Inside the house he has purchased in suburban Berlin, he discovers a stash of diamonds and sets out to try to find the rightful owner. When he’s fears he’s being followed and things go awry in the airport, he decides to enlist the help of beautiful Hallelujah, an American Jewish girl, he has met on the plane. Trying to throw his pursuers off-track, he convinces her to take a Scandinavian cruise with him before they begin their search for the true titleholders of the diamonds.

Will Hallelujah and Alexander discover the owners of the jewels? Is love a possibility for these two very different people? And what are stumble stones?

Author Marilyn Baron flashes you back to Germany’s dreadful past during World War II in this historical romantic suspense while weaving a sorrowful, but beautiful tale of people caught up in tragedy. Yet, her present day love story, intertwined throughout the novel, gives the reader hope that love will always prevail. A highly recommended read.

Have you ever heard of stumble stones? If not, read this fantastic novel and the term will never be the same again. Stumble Stones: A Novel by Marilyn Baron will not only entertain you and keep you turning the pages but open your heart and shed light on a beautiful memorial to Holocaust survivors. This romantic suspense novel has all the elements I'm looking for when I want a book to take me away. Baron's main character, Hallejuiah will make you laugh and have you rooting for her as she struggles with love and life just like the soap opera character she writes about. I'm a "Romancing the Stone" movie fan and this reminds me of one of my favorite films--instead of jungles... picture historical and present day Berlin. Inspired by real art, Stumble Stones is a romance with a meaty story and historical facts worth remembering and worth your time. And, yes this would make a great movie.

A true good versus evil story

The author knocked this one out of the park. She wove two stories side-by-side with the paths growing closer and closer with each chapter until they collided. A true good versus evil story. Hallelujah meets Alexander, through a quirk of wrong-place-wrong-time happenings and then they join forces in an attempt to right the wrongs from another generation. I love how Marilyn wove historical facts and happenings into her story, teaching us bits of history in such an entertaining way. Well done.

I’m not your typical Romance novel reader. But then, “Stumble Stones” is not your typical Romance novel. It fits easily into a number of categories – mysteries, action thrillers, tragedies, comedies, historical fiction – and, yes, steamy romance! In addition to being entertaining, exciting, and intriguing, “Stumble Stones” takes us on an international chase to find missing links to a story that connects a betrayed and heart-broken soap opera writer to a handsome hedge fund manager to a package of priceless WWII-era diamonds to victims of the Holocaust to good and evil surviving family members to an underground syndicate dealing in stolen art and jewels to – well, you get the picture. Marilyn Baron has masterfully woven together a multi-layered, multi-generational, multi-cultural story with enough twists, turns, and surprises to keep readers turning the page. I picked it up mid-morning, took a break for lunch, and finished it off this afternoon. Bravo, Ms. Baron!

I could not put this book down. It had all of the elements that I like. The author takes us on a historical romantic journey with a touch of mystery. I never heard of Stumble Stones. Having theses stones is very meaningful to me as I am a child of a Holocaust survivor. Ou Book Club was fortunate enough to have the author speak to us. Her presentation was amazing. I highly recommend booking her.
I could see this book made into a movie.

Stumble Stones brought me new insights of this dark time and thru Barons tone ,development of plot and love introduced elements of the Holocaust
in a unique manner of importance ,perspective and presented as a believable, though fictional account with a collection of intriguing and creative characters...,
I so enjoyed this work ,could not put it down and excitedly grabbed for it at every possible moment til the last page -and wanted MORE! Perhaps
a sequel ?-MZ.
