Stumbling Towards Inclusion: Finding Grace in Imperfect Leadership Kindle Edition
In her work with hundreds of companies and CEOs, Dr. Priya Nalkur has found that many leaders want to advance inclusion and equity in the workplace, but aren’t sure how. Knowing that the stakes are high, leaders are afraid of messing up and saying the wrong thing. She has distilled her extensive coaching experience into a set of practical tools for navigating uncertain waters. Her book weaves together memoir, social science, and practical insight in a way that will speak equally to those who have personally encountered barriers of bias and discrimination, and those aspiring to step up as allies. Offering permission and relief from the fear of getting things wrong, Priya refreshingly reminds us that imperfection is a gift, and the source of shared grace.
Stumbling Towards Inclusion stakes out a vision of inclusivity as not just a strategy, but also a mindset rooted in empathy and humanity. Drawing on experiences from her popular workshop series, Priya guides readers through the mechanics of inclusive leadership, including courageous conversations, honest listening, and using our voices for advocacy and change. She demonstrates how, with commitment and reflection, anyone can fulfill the promise of inclusive leadership—and emerge as a better leader, period. Embracing grace and imperfection, this compelling narrative will inspire readers to embark on their own inclusive journeys, and to take the risks necessary to catalyze positive change.

Her book inspires through the unfolding of her personal journey and provides the language and approach to discussing these important topics. My book is highly underlined with takeaways/nuggets. I thank Dr. Nalkur for providing us with this guide to better understand how to have challenging conversations in a safe and healthy environment.
From the moment I delved into this profound work, I was captivated by Dr. Nalkur's ability to blend personal narrative with scholarly insight, creating a tapestry of understanding that is both deeply moving and intellectually enriching. As someone who navigates the complexities of leadership as a person of color, her words struck a chord within me, resonating with experiences both professional and personal.
One of the most compelling aspects of "Stumbling Towards Inclusion" is Dr. Nalkur's unwavering commitment to authenticity through self-exploration and understanding. She fearlessly confronts uncomfortable truths about the state of diversity and inclusion efforts, acknowledging the inherent challenges and failures while simultaneously offering a beacon of hope for a better, more equitable future. This level of candor is refreshing and necessary in a discourse often marked by platitudes and superficiality.
Moreover, Dr. Nalkur's emphasis on the journey towards inclusion is profoundly empowering. Instead of presenting inclusion as a static destination, she portrays it as a dynamic, ongoing process characterized by growth, reflection, and resilience. This perspective is invaluable for leaders like myself who are navigating the complexities of organizational change in pursuit of a more just and equitable society.
What sets "Stumbling Towards Inclusion" apart is its emphasis on intersectionality and the recognition of the interconnected nature of identity and privilege. Dr. Nalkur deftly navigates the nuances of race, gender, class, sexuality, and other axes of diversity, highlighting the importance of embracing complexity in our pursuit of inclusion. By centering marginalized voices and experiences, she challenges readers to interrogate their own biases and privileges, fostering a deeper understanding of systemic oppression and its impact on individuals and communities.
As someone deeply invested in creating inclusive spaces, I found Dr. Nalkur's practical insights to be invaluable. From strategies for building diverse teams to fostering a culture of belonging, each chapter is filled with actionable advice grounded in both research and real-world experience. Whether you're a seasoned executive or a budding leader, there's something in "Stumbling Towards Inclusion" for everyone committed to effecting positive change in their organizations and beyond.
"Stumbling Towards Inclusion" is not just a book; it's a manifesto for a more just and equitable world. Dr. Priya Nalkur's profound wisdom, unwavering commitment to authenticity, and relentless optimism make this essential reading for anyone striving to build a more inclusive future. I wholeheartedly recommend it to leaders, change-makers, and advocates alike. Together, let us stumble towards inclusion, knowing that with each step forward, we are closer to realizing our shared vision of justice and equity for all.
Dr Priya Nalkur has consolidated her years of experience in leadership coaching, drawing from insights from her popular workshop series and identifying barriers to the well-intentioned goals of inclusivity in the workplace, to bolster productivity and creativity.
It is apparent that her years of education at some of the most elite institutions in the country have guided her approach to leadership such that it is rooted in science and effective behavioral modification.
She highlights the importance of seeing imperfection as a catalyst for change, not judgement. She clearly summarizes the approach necessary for leaders to create the desired environment of inclusivity and effective advocacy.
As she writes in the book’s preface, Dr. Nalkur “wanted to lay out a path in which human fallibility isn’t just an unfortunate part of the journey but intrinsic to it.” She does exactly that in such a refreshing and inviting way. Dr. Nalkur writes with the same truth-telling, love, and clarity that her clients, colleagues and workshop participants know so well.
Dr. Nalkur folds concepts, tools and resources into her stories and teachings, informed by her identity and experience as a woman of color, dual national, divorceé, mother, Psychologist, and Founder and President of a global research and coaching firm.
Thank you, Dr. Nalkur, for sharing your insights, stories, examples and tools (especially the LEAD continuum in chapter 30!) with us.

For me this book has invited me to dig deeper, think more broadly, and know that it is possible to make a difference, and to change the "way things are", without first having to be perfect.
