I just read your new book from cover to cover in one sitting. It is, to me, the most wonderful of all your books to date and shows such a deep and rich evolution of your skill as a poet. But most importantly, it shows the depth of your love for your parents and family, and a compassionate heart that intimately knows, can speak of, and is not afraid of grief. What a gift you are offering your readers.
Thank you SO much for sharing this with me. I wept openly (anticipatory grief?) when reading the poem about Mary's loss ("somewhere between the broccoli and the yogurt..."). I LOVED Wisteria, and pictured you (all of us) beneath it in full glory, poolside at your house; I'll never look at Wisteria again the same way. And I think Better at Doing Nothing is nothing short of brilliant. And "he hands me the cup of his sorrow" conjures such beautiful compassion and deep knowing...I could go on and on.
Maybe it's just that "when the reader is ready, the writer appears", but Stunning Absence feels like much more than this. I'm feeling an entirely new level of your deep understanding of the bittersweet and tender "stuff" of intimacy, love and loss. Thank you.
Wow. Keep writing!
Susan Florence's tenderness and insight provides meaning to life with grief.
This poetry book is a "gem" where the reader can find solace in missing a loved one through life affirming memories that never leave us. What better gift is there to give to a loved one by honoring their grief ?
