We looked at many bags, and I can say without a doubt that this bag truly saved us! It is very roomy inside, and all the features are perfect. We loved the top flap because we were able to unzip it while on board to reach in and pet her without being too noticeable. I added photos of our pug in the bag, and she had lots of room to move and sleep. She looks small in the bag sitting or lying, so that's the ideal when you show up at the counter. When standing, she is about 13 inches tall (to the top of her head), so her head did hit the top of the bag. That didnt bother her, but we were afraid she would look tight according to the airline person. She is about 16 inches from nose to tail, so we really thought this bag would be small. I actually ordered both the Large and the XL, but the XL would never be approved for an under-the-seat bag, and we could not take a chance. But once the dog relaxed and settled down in the bag, she "snugged up" into her sitting or sleeping shape, and it looked very roomy, as you can see in the photo.
I read the comments about the bag being hard to carry, but that is a small issue to get the benefits of this bag. A boxy shape would be easier to carry but it is much tigher for the dog inside. This bag seems perfectly designed to get the most room for the size. The "smushable" top is perfect. It gives extra room while still fitting under the seat. The seperate top rods allow them to be "smushed" independantly of each other, so while on board, we pulled the bag out a few inches from under the seat to expose one of the top flaps. We were able to unzip that flap to reach in the bag. The bottom cushion is perfect and does not consume as much room as it appears to (since it flattens under the weight of the dog). It is functional as well as comfortable - without the pad the dog slids around the bag. The pad has velco under the bottom attaching it to the bag.
We spent at least 2 weeks getting her used to the bag so she would be ok in it the day of the flight, and I recommend this. First we put treats in the bag, and then built up to zipping her in the bag for a few hours while sleeping. This is really the perfect bag, and I'm sure whoever designed the SturdiBag is an airline traveler with a small/mid-sized dog. A tiny dog can go in a small bag under the seat, and a large dog would be ok in cargo, but it is very hard for the mid-sized dog. This really works for an under-the-seat bag! Couldn't be more satisfied with this purchase!
I'm adding an update (June 2012): We still love the bag! We have not needed it for airline travel since our move, but it is also perfect for car rides. It can be held securely with the car seat belt, and works much better than the hard kennel we had used for car rides. She is very secure inside, and she does not slide around. The bag was a great purchase all around. It will last a long time - very well designed and very well made.
Love it! Sorry picture isn't high quality.
~Took me ten minutes to install the two little rods. It's do-able but a little annoying. Maybe if I was a little stronger it wouldn't have been a problem.
~Wish it had a second entrance on the other end, not a huge deal. My boy can still stand and turn around just fine.
P.S. I love the hot pink it came in. Matches my luggage.
Details: The bag has adjustable shoulder straps (that can easily be extended to fit cross-body or made to fit a variety of single shoulder lengths) and good handles, both of which I've found to make carrying as easy as possible. It's made of a fabric that resists tears and pulls (my cat's claws haven't made a dent in it, and he wasn't happy the first time we had to use it) and comes with a really substantial piece of cardboard that slips into the bottom compartment to provide a solid, flat base. There are velcro attachments at both ends of the bag's interior to hold the thickly padded cushion (which has a fleece-y feel and washes well) securely in place no matter how much your pet moves around. The bag also features flexible rods that fit in covered pockets around both the ends and long sides of the bag to maintain its shape so that it can condensed enough to fit under an airplane seat without suffocating your pet or preventing it from moving around enough to make itself comfortable - even when using the collar/harness tether. That the top and rear/front panels can both be covered with the solid nylon fabric to allow for privacy or velcroed back to provide a view and extra airflow are really nice features; the covers have both helped me keep my kitty quiet on airplanes (though I'm not sure why that works?) and sneak him into work (without the see-through mesh, even the large bag just looks like a durable duffle bag!). The zipper pocket on the back of the bag is a good size without adding bulk or taking up too much room inside the bag; I've been able to store a couple servings of food in Ziplocs, a 2-5 oz. bag of treats, a leash, a small, collapsible travel bowl, an extra cat toy or two, and a travel-sized pack of wet wipes. Another plus for me is the mechanism included with each pair of pulls for the zippers enclosing the various entrance/exit points; they have a claw-hook type feature that you can use to hold the zippers together and will prevent your pet from escaping even if you forget to close the zipper all the way or your pet is able to make a little gap between them - breakouts foiled! I was also really pleased to discover that the bag has seatbelt straps, which make me feel a lot safer when traveling with my pet in the car.
---> Update: After our last trip, which was longer than past trips we've taken with this bag, my kitty has taken to using his carrier as a frequent napping spot - I still haven't been able to pack it away in its storage case! The front flap can be unzipped, rolled up, and secured to the base with a velcro tab allow for easy entry/exit, so I guess the makers anticipated this. Great work, SturdiBag!
