"This is a textbook about interior design," Hicks writes in the introduction. You can learn from one of the most successful designers of the 20th century who combined antique with modern stylishly. It is great to read his own words. Any interior designer would benefit from learning from one of the pioneers in the field. Hicks is one of the most influential designers ever, and many designers list him as a huge influence. There are many images in this book of Hicks' work in black and white and color. You will wish they were all in color. Still a delight.
Readers will likely find the mix of classic decoration with modern elements as refreshing today as it was in the 80s. Although many of the specifics are dated, most of the philosophy is sound and still valid today. Professionals and advanced do-it-yourself-ers can provide their own editing and will enjoy the David Hicks approach featuring his own lines of furniture, fabrics and carpets.
