Style As Far As Your Eye Can See

Why are there not 100 reviews posted about this book all over the internet? This book is simply the best graffiti book ever written in our opinion. We have stacks and stacks of books on graffiti art and no other book explains the evolution or thinking processes behind the graffiti art form the way "Style: Writing From the Underground" does.

This book is a paperback, 120 pages or so, printed on medium weight paper with a nice, low-glossy finish. The photographs and illustrations are crisp and full of important information on developments and advancements in letter design, starting way back in the beginning with images of old scool tags. The photos of full color pieces on the trains are excellent as well. There are not as many pictures as in some other graffiti art books, but this book is not about pictures anyway.

This book makes it very clear that the most important element of graffiti art is Style. Many writers are quoted extensively, giving their own take on what they believe style is all about. Here's an example: "Style has always been each writers finger print. Some writers have styles that are so complex that they are 'irreadable", but at this point it doesn't matter what the name is because the style of the piece links you to it's creator" - DAZE

Throughout the book, Phase 2, the author, interjects his own ideas and philosophies on graffiti, style, writers and writing. His comments are very thought-provoking and elevate the discussion intellectually in a way we haven't seen in any other book. If you really want to understand this art form from the inside out, you have to read and re-read this book. Basically this book is brilliant!

A Gem!

I got this book personally from the Author, D. Schmidlapp who I hadn't seen in about 20yrs! It's a gem of a find as it is out of print & the latest, revised versions are only found in Europe (as I understand). The book is loaded with flicks from decades ago & presents an organized time line of train graffiti. It's very nostolgic & the type of book that you'll wanna pick up again & again to review the old shots! A must have for a serious collector of graff books.

Very important book when it came out in the 90s originally. Arranged in chronological order, the photos tell the story of urban letter drawing and its evolution 70's to early 90s. The author of the book makes this book impossible to be bad. It is from the writers, to the writers. At the time it was important to have such a book ... it still is, but more for the fact that it''s a landmark in terms of graff books. It set the bar for what is at the core of this culture, in my opinion, style. If you could only have one book graff book, i'd probably pick this one, as i would need something comprehensive about the foundations, from which to build something strong on.
