Sorry...a book like this is what happens when a non-fiction research writer dabbles in narrative fiction. It's such a mess. There's no character introduction let alone development. There's no narrative and there's no coherence. There's no life in the writing...no sense of rhythm or flow. It's a lifeless assault of equal length sentences rambling disjointedly from one chapter to the next. There's too much expectation on the reader to do the narrative work the author should be laying out herself.
The attempt is way ham fisted...poor descriptive writing with chunks of historical fact kind of forced in from time to time. Ok, I picked up a few bits of information here and there. But that kind of reward, in hindsight, just isn't worth it. The book just rambles nonsensically for way too much of its length.
It's a cool idea...and others have tried to get fiction and non fiction together...people like Graham Hancock for example. I haven't read his stories though. I heard they weren't too hot. So while it's a cool idea...seems it's not easy to pull off. I bought book 1 and book 2 so I'll slog onto book 2. Maybe it improves.
