Editorial Reviews

During the Cold War the Soviet Union deployed a fleet of nearly 700 diesel and nuclear submarines, some of them armed with nuclear missiles. To face this alarming threat, the U.S. Navy developed a host of new anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft and ships, and devoted an entire class of attack submarines to the ASW mission.Featured on this DVD are five rare films showing the Navy's ASW capabilities at the height of the Cold War. Watch as land-based P-2 Neptune and P-3 Orion aircraft, carrier-based Grumman S-2 Tracker aircraft and helicopters work in concert with destroyers and friendly submarines to locate and track rogue subs. Learn about the equipment, from sonobuoys to magnetic anomaly detectors and forward looking infrared scanners, used to detect snorkeling and submerged submarines. See the weapons that would have been unleashed had the Cold War become a hot one. Digitally remastered and restored from original 16mm prints, many of these films have never been available to the public, and some have only recently been declassified. Please note, due to their age and rarity, image and sound quality can vary. Films are black and white and color.

About the worst thing that happens to you when you're captain of a submarine, is to get caught on the surface by an opponent. Actually worse than that was what happened to us back in my Navy days when I was an electrician striker aboard a submarine that'll remain nameless. Mainly we got caught on the surface snorkeling by a friendly P-3 Orion based in Adak, Alaska. They shot some nice 8x10 glossy photos of our sail...needless to say they were posted all over Pearl Harbor when we got home. You'd of thought we were Miss January.

Anyway I guess you could say I've always had a love/hate relationship with the guys in the anti-submarine warfare game. They're on our side, true, but at the same time when you're down in the ocean in a metal tube the last thing you want to hear is the pinging of a sonobuoy. Still gives me the willies.

Also the thing I always hated about ASW is serving on board a sub that has to act as a practice target for the fleet...talk about painfully boring. Then again, when I spent a couple days as a replacement aboard an attack boat tasked with ASW as the primary mission, it was kind of fun. You're a hunter, hunting a hunter.

This is all a long way of saying that I admire the folks who do ASW, and this DVD is a wonderful tribute to those guys who spend long countless hours flying over the Pacific looking for snorkels and listening to headphones trying to sort shrimp from submarine engines. There are a bunch of great films on here showing all aspects of ASW, including a film called "The Submariners" shot aboard the USS Shark that shows a pretty rigorous ASW exercise. There's also footage of some Albacore boats, and rare footage of the USS Scorpion. There's also a lot of coverage of ASW aircraft including Orions, Trackers and helicopters.

This DVD gives a really fascinating overview of what it takes to find and kill enemy submarines. If you've ever seen "The Enemy Below" or thrilled to "Das Boot" then you know how gripping anti-submarine warfare can be. This film shows true life efforts of the U.S. Navy during the Cold War to identify and track Russkie submarines. There's a great deal of material on the DVD and some of it is in full color (although a lot is black and white). Worth a look.

Five old Navy orientation films circa 1970. The films can all be found on YouTube. There is a large and distracting watermark on the films that persists throughout all of them all of the time.
