There's something to be said about a book that you decide to read on a whim hoping that it's at least half-decent. I'm happy to say that this novel definitely surpassed all my expectations as this is a terrific, thought-provoking, and suspense-filled thriller that keeps you engaged from beginning to end. Included are likeable and well-developed characters that come across and feel so realistic; my favourite being Marcus, the "superhero" of the story.

The two protagonists at the heart of the story is Marcus and Rebecca, two people who are far from perfect, definitely flawed, and both harbouring a lot of regrets of past decisions but in the end able to move on. I love that there was no BS with either of them; there's no miscommunicated or misunderstood scenario that would have one of them quickly call it quits, yell or shout, and/or take off with the wrong assumption. Talk about refreshing. They both enter a relationship knowing everything there is to know about the other, putting everything out there on the table, nothing hidden, no secrets, and still entering a relationship full of hope, understanding, and eventually love. All of the above a true testament to the author's wonderful writing.

Even hours after I've finished this novel I'm still thinking about one element that really stood out for me. We all have opinions when it comes to those who have serious addictions, whether it is gambling, drugs, or alcohol. Rebecca's soon-to-be ex-husband, Wesley, has a gambling addiction that has brought nothing but misery to her and the kids. Knowing full well that Marcus had a drug-addiction and still fights it on a daily basis, Rebecca still enters into a relationship with him. Would I have done the same thing in her position? I have no idea.

I read this book on a recent flight home, and literally, could not put it down. The anxiety I felt for these characters, as they were going through their ordeal, was unbelievable. This book was very well written, had great character development, and kept me interested with every page. While this was my first experience with this author, it certainly won't be my last!!

This is a great new thriller by Cheryl Tardif. I'll break the book into 3 acts.

The 1st act sets the background of the characters and Cheryl does a real nice job helping us understand these people, making them 3 dimensional and empathizing with them.

Act 2 is genius. The book is worth buying for this Act alone. Cheryl does a masterful job making the tension palpable. She puts you in these characters heads / hearts and their predicament. She manages to bring out the horror of the situation but at the same time, keeps the humanity in place and even the heart tugging between characters. This is clearly some of the best writing that Cheryl has ever done. It was at this point, I couldn't put the book down, burning through the pages wanting to find out what would happen next! I stayed up all night (till 9AM finishing the book). Act 2 is the heart and soul of the book as well as the "meat" of the book.

Act 3 takes us on more of a soap opera type journey. Many "who done it?" twists and turns. It's more of a difficult transition from the grit and heart of Act 2 but once you settle in, it's a fun ride.

What I liked most about this books was the many meanings of the word "Submerged" (Physically submerged, mentally submerged and emotionally submerged) and the way the characters each deal with their version of being submerged, while striving to get their heads above water.

I highly recommend it!
PS: I could really relate to the Detective - "a good cop and a good guy" - hope to see more of him in the future.

I'm sorry but I can't give this book a positive review. All the twists were obvious and predictable. The actions of the characters were sometimes absurd, such as when the protagonist somehow managed to read several chapters forward because he decides to take a diving tank to rescue a woman in a car accident the middle of the forest. Or when she is trapped in the car with possibly dying kids, broken ribs and an almost dead cellphone, she decides that's a good time to find out it the 911 telephone dispatcher is single or dating anyone.

**NOTE** I won this book in a contest for readers. I in no way know Cheryl Kay Tardif except as a reader and fan. This review reflects my true feelings for the book and is not a reflection of a personal connection to the author and/or winning the book. It is an honest opinion intended to help other readers.**

I became a huge Cheryl Kaye Tardif fan after reading Children of the Fog! And she once again delivered with Submerged. From the first sentence I was hooked. And Marcus...I took the ride with him. *A BIT OF A SPOILER* And when I read the line, "He had killed Jane. And Ryan," (Marcus's deceased wife and son) chills ran up and down my spine. I love how I took the journey with Marcus, through his loss of so many people that he loved, but instead of feeling like the story dragged I very much felt like it carried me along at just the right pace. *END OF SPOILER* Tardif has a knack for making you go deep into the psyche of her characters with just a few words, making it impossible to put the book down. I'm never disappointed with her books and love her style and voice. She's at the top of my favorite list!
