This book had me laughing out loud repeatedly. But this is not to say the subject matter is a joke because there are important themes here. Our MC and narrator, David, is trying to find meaning in his life and a connection to a lover despite his grief over the tragic death of his friend. There’s feelings of guilt and remorse and grief all mixed up in him as he experiences an adult ‘coming of age’.
I really had a hard time with the idea of blame and forgiveness in this. I do think negligence is not an acceptable excuse for poor behavior, but I also do not think that one mistake or one poor choice should define one person’s entire life. That doesn’t work for me either. The balance presented here is great.
For those who are hesitant to read this due to the BDSM aspects, I’ll say they are highly prevalent. It’s like the setting is BDSM and that impacts how the story goes, but that’s not really what the story is about. It’s the How rather than the What.
So, if you are okay with some kink in your reading material and you can read about serious subjects handled with humor, then I highly recommend this one.
Meantime, David enters a relationship with an older dom who annoys him to death while seriously turning him on. As their relationship develops into something more, we are privy to the heart & soul of David as he learns to let go, trust, and take his punishment like a man. There are so many laugh out loud moments in this book. Some of the quotes are just hilarious. But at the same time, this is a very real, emotional read that was sincere and heartfelt. Beautifully written, the author calls attention to the serious subject matter in a unique, powerful story that is a Must Read.
I think that, overall, I enjoyed the story and I know that I will definitely continue on with the other Subs Club books. I felt a lot of emotions while reading this book, and I think that I just have to take some time proceeding them all.
It takes you on highs and lows as it not only explores the very real concerns subs must have in this life style, but also the joys and insecurity of new love.
I can’t wait to read the next books in the series.
I really enjoyed this book. It was funny, there was more going on in the protagonists' loves than this romance, and all of the characters were deeply drawn.
Wonderful start to a new series by one of my favorite authors. Loved David and david and the rest of the characters. D/s. BDSM, humor and serious topics and concerns addressed in a thoughtful way. Can't wait to read the next book.
This book is a fairly light read and not a bad book in any way. It was a fun read but I kept getting caught up in the details - which I know may seem like a silly concern when reading fiction.
Edited July 2017 to add - When I initially read the book, I did not appreciate it as much as I felt the entire concept of the series was not something that fell easily within the BDSM reality. Then, I read the other books and re-read the first book. Seeing the collection as a whole, the first book is more enjoyable and makes more sense. I can now better see these characters and how their story came to be. I initially gave the book a 3 star review when read at start of series. After rereading it at the end of the series, I feel like it is deserving of a 5 star review. Even though each book is technically a standalone, you get much more out of the series if read as a whole. It takes a few individual 3 or 4 star review quality books and moves the group as a whole closer to a 5 star review, if this makes sense.
