First the bad:
The "Case studies" are rather generic: although styled as actual interviews they are not very convincing - it seems as though the author made them up and just presented them as such to mimic the effective style of Eliyahu Goldratt. The perfunctory pictures are the least useful I have seen on this subject and don't impart much knowledge at all. I was hoping for more up-to-date pictures of actual checklists, wall postings, examples of implementations, both right and wrong.
And the good:
The introduction is by far the strongest part of this book - explaining for example why a workplace's cleanliness will default to the messiest person. I also liked the departure from the usual slavish adherence to beginning each phase with a word beginning with "S"; the author makes a sensible change and names the stages 2,3,4,5: Organizing, Cleaning, Routines, and Discipline respectively. He correctly emphasizes that 5S is an ongoing process, not a one-week affair beginning with a pizza party. This is written more for managers rather than a handbook for the employees, however managers will need more meat on the bone than this book provides.
I love this book (That is the reason for five star).
- Firstly, shows the Japanese attitude
- Secondly, explains that 5S is much more than just a cleaning campaign
- Thirdly, suitable explanation is provided
- Gives the right examples and case studies
- Provides suitable photographs which helps understanding
- (Some of the explanations are really impressive)
Lay out, structure 4/5
Value for money 4.5/5
Although the process seems easy and straight forward it is hard to put it into practice.
This book worths the time and money of the readres :-)
Congratulations to the author!
Oskar Olofsson writes a book that can be used if there is a need to explain what 5S is, and also a book that can be used as a step by step - guide, when implementing the system. It suits a beginner like me and might also be helpful as a reminder for those more experienced.
I did think it ended rather abruptly. The beginning is very inclusive, creating almost a stage where this system is then presented. At the end I would have appreciated a summary of what I have achieved, having finished the book, and maybe a short encouraging statement such as "now you know how to do this, so just get on and try 5S." Because that is how I feel having read the book. Ready to try 5S on.

A short and well balanced explanation to help grasping the short term and long term goal, the why.
A good path to follow with key point to hold.
