-- My mom parked the car and started to pop the trunk so we could carry the gifts inside. As we walked around to the back of the car, I started to cry. I couldn’t stop the sentence that was going to change my life. “Mom, I can’t go through with the wedding.” Followed by, “Don’t unload the gifts.” (I was upset, but I was also practical).--
I read about 50 books a year. I calibrate a book’s value against a simple question? With whom do I want to share it? All too often these days, the answer is “no one.” When I finished this book, however, I had a long list of people in mind, starting with my daughter and with a colleague who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. The book is based on the writer’s experiences and told in the first person. When people talk (or write) about themselves, they tend to do it at length and with a liberal dose of repetition. This book is not written that way. The author gets her messages across concisely. There are no wasted words. The paragraphs are short. The content is easy to digest. And did I mention that she is funny?
The book is also full of “things I have always known but never realized.” Here are a few that made me stop and think:
• I can’t work for someone who doesn’t trust me. (I realized I can’t be married to them, either.)
• Stop envisioning the perfect job. Start envisioning a lifetime of jobs.
• I am at my best when work is a thing I do rather than a place I go.
• I hung on to expired relationships too long because I became paralyzed when I pictured the break-up discussion.
And because I am a writer (aspiring, failed, frustrated, rejected, etc.) I love someone who can play with words and syntax to get my attention. This example comes from a thank you to someone called HRH in the Acknowledgements: “Because of you, there’s within my heart a melody.” Damn, that’s good. Could have been penned by Cole Porter. So if the Acknowledgements contain gems like that, imagine what the rest of the book is worth!
the wisdom impacted in the book can be helpful.
