James Scott Bell spins a fast-paced and enjoyable romp in this work. Take a break, put your feet up, and follow the escapades of Jimmy Gallagher. Riding a gurney down a busy street? Yes, that is one to add to the bucket list.

I wasn't sure this would be my type story, but I do like James Scott Bell's writing and have read many of his novels. This short (very short) one still managed to have lots of unexpected happenings. I enjoyed it!

Jimmy Gallagher is walking his dog, Steve, when everything went wrong. Stopping at a Chinese laundry, he encounters a man in a bad mood and decides to pick a fight with Gallagher. Needless to say, not the best idea the guy ever had.

And then the day gets even worse! How in the world did he wind up losing his dog? Getting thrown in jail? Getting caught in the middle of a turf war between two Chinese gangs?

Although Gallagher has a devil-may-care attitude, it's actually his dog, Steve, that I liked better.

Not one of the better short stories I've read.

Sucker Punched by James Scott Bell is both pleasing and disappointing at one and the same time. Bell’s short tale of Jimmy Gallagher, an Irish pugilist in L.A., and his bulldog Steve, is a delight to read. It’s funny – I mean, really funny – to follow Gallagher and Steve as he decides to get his shirt cleaned at J. Wong’s laundry, plays Sir Galahad when Wong is bullied by a German boxer with a glass jaw, gets him arrested as a vagrant, and then beaten senseless by the cops, and if that’s not enough, finds himself kidnapped by a Chinese gang that insists he must engage in a ‘fight to the death.’
Witty dialogue and a gritty setting – probably a part L.A. you’d want to avoid – just sucks you right in. Then, darn it, Bell disappointed me by ending the story. There I was wanting to know what trouble Jimmy would get into next, and ‘bingo!’ the story was over. I guess, though, I can forgive the author this minor disappointment, because he promises more. Well, he danged well better deliver on that promise – I’ll be waiting.

I love the Jimmy Gallagher stories! Talk about action! What a day Jimmy's having! One bump after another and he handles them all in his usual Irish style. If you don't know Irish Jimmy Gallagher, you're missing out on a lovable character. Bell's short stories are some of my favorite reads!

I loved this short story about a day in the life of Irish Jimmy Gallagher. Los Angeles, a bulldog named Steve, Irish whiskey, street fights, and an inscrutable sifu are the elements that add up to a fun "throw back" read.

James Scott Bell is my favorite author of writing how-to instructions. I had never read any of his fiction, so I got this short novella (or short story?). He's still my favorite author of those writing how-to instructions. I think, perhaps, this book was not aimed at me. I liked it okay, but I really do prefer full novels. This kept me turning pages (okay, poking my Kindle to turn those pages), and quite engrossed. I did wonder, as I read, about the main character, but it all turned out well in the end, so I'd better not spoil it for anyone else by telling more.

A seamless ride from the opening disturbance with a flurry of fists, to rising tension and humor (including a crazy gurney ride down the streets of L.A.), and finishing with an unexpected and resonant climax and ending. This story will suck you in, make you laugh, and make you care about poor Jimmy. Before you know it the ride will be over and you'll want more.
