Suckerpunch, Jeremy Brown's outstanding debut novel, is a visceral thrill-ride through the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). His character, Aaron `Woodshed' Wallace, is as tough as they come - an MMA fighter with more heart than sense, but a man you would always choose to cover your back. He's trying to change, trying to overcome the harsh life and mistakes in his past, and is well aware he is often his own worst enemy. But he also knows two other things; he can fight, and he can win...

In Suckerpunch, Brown provides a no-holds-barred, straight-ahead action tale. His prose is as stripped down and powerful as the fighters and situations he writes about. Things go from bad to worse, and then much worse, for Woodshed as Brown tells his tale, before he provides the much anticipated fight and follow-up for the readers' satisfaction.

There were times I found myself wondering how Brown, the writer, was going to get Woodshed, the fighter, out of the incredibly dangerous corners into which he'd been painted. With as many action novels as I've read, this was an unusual occurrence - and I enjoyed every agonizing second of it. But the best part was Brown didn't falter or crush my `suspension of disbelief' as his plot unfolded toward its resolution.

Suckerpunch is not just an excellent debut novel, it's an excellent novel period. I'm certainly going to be rooting for both Brown and Woodshed when round two is published in 2012.

Generic but fun

There have been lots of mysteries written about boxers and even karate experts, but Suckerpunch tries to stand out by being about an MMA fighter. To some extent this works as the setup does feel a bit different and the action itself feels fresh and modern. Unfortunately, as the story progresses it becomes more generic- yet another tough guy who gets knocked down and gets up again. The MMA aspect becomes more of a gimmick in an otherwise forgettable story that could have just as easily been about a boxer or ex cop or pretty much anyone. It's still an easy and relatively fun read, but unfortunately nothing special or particularly memorable.

After a weekend where someone was quoted saying "Here comes the Boom" was a superior MMA film to "Warrior" I needed to go back to the begining.

Jeremy's first book in the series gives you the honesty of a Mixed Martial Artist. Some do what they do for love, some regret, some simply because they like the violence. Aaron "Woodshed" Wallace does it for all of these and more.

Compact and compelling, the story takes place over one week and holds the drama and pace of a Dan Brown novel. Jeremy has written a heroic anti-hero and shown that the magic is not just in the foreground but in the richness of his supporting cast.

If you ever want to see what the fighter's think but their organization's never allow their fighter's to share, read this book for a look behind the curtain.

I don't remember many "fight" movies (well, OK, Rocky, Requiem for a Heavyweight, FightClub..) because I don't seek them out, they just happen across my field of vision. Well, same thing happened here. I just came across this book and was happily surprised when it turned out to be so interesting and fun. Easy to like the characters. Really easy to enjoy the writing style. I even learned some facts about fighting MMA. Nice surprise.

I had this book knocked-out in 3 nights of reading, no pun intended. The characters, background and storyline are excellent. During the day I found myself wondering about what would happen next and couldn't wait to get home at night to read more. Really enjoyable read and I highly recommend it for anyone who loves MMA or just enjoys hearing about a good a** beating. Also, seriously good internal dialogue for the main character and I caught myself laughing out loud several times in regards to his comments to other story characters. All in all, pick it up you will enjoy it. Can't wait for the sequel.

This was such a great book! Normally this would not have been the type of book I would pick up and read, but when the opportunity presented itself, I could not put it down. It was very action based and an enjoyable read with some great dialogue that had me chuckling along the way. Every time I was wrapping up a chapter and I thought I may be able to put it down, I had to keep reading to find out what will happen to Woodshed next. I would recommend reading this book to anyone even if MMA is not up your alley. I am excited to see further adventures of Woodshed!

Suckerpunch will keep you on your toes! Just when you think the coast is clear for Woodshed think again! I couldn't believe how the storyline held my attention so well! Brown does a great job at including technical fighting descriptions without diving too deep and loosing an audience who doesn't know much about the sport. Woodshed's story was a great way to show how someone can flourish after a harsh childhood. Can't wait to hear more about Woodshed's past and future!
