After reading all the good reviews; I thought I'd try this JOBY. IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM!! Once you twist it, it is locked on and I pulled on it with virtually all my strength and couldn't budge it.
The quality of the entire thing is pretty dang good. If I have a con about any of it, is that I couldn't completely tighten the screw enough to keep the arm from moving at all. The ball and arm that attaches to the ball are a lot like a RAM mount. When you tighten down on a RAM mount, it locks it in place and its not moving at all. The JOBY got pretty tight, but you were able to move the arm physically if you wanted to without having to loosen the screw. Even though it doesn't completely tighten, while using it on my jetski moving 65+ MPH, the arm completely stayed in place and didn't move. I hit waves and splashed it and it never budged.
I am very pleased with my purchase. I will be purchasing another one to use for another purpose entirely.
I was not paid nor did I receive this product at a discount for this review. I paid full price.
If I ever have need of more mounts, I will be buying these, and telling anyone who is looking for one to get one.
One of the best windshield mounts I've used (I've actually seen the same Joby mount in some search engine research cars...) Very strong grip to the windshield. The only complaint is a lack of movement in the arms. I guess that's why they have a flexible arm solution... The red stands out and can sometimes show up as a reflection in the window. Otherwise, highly recommended for driving vantage points, both interior and exterior (haven't tried an exterior mount yet).
Since I've been happy with Joby products in the past, this seemed worth giving it a shot.
Now, I have a few suction cup mounting arms already, and none of them had enough grip to even dare trying any exterior car shots, so, I was skeptical about the claims of how strong this was, just because I hadn't come across a cup that seemed to hold much weight, but, it seems that's because I hadn't tried a Joby! This thing is a monster in how strong it holds!
It has a unique twist grip, and, as long as the surface is clean, it's not coming off until you release it. When you do, it comes off without any effort at all, so they have really mastered the suction cup grip here, and hats off to Joby on that one!
Second, the vibration absorption -- EXCELLENT! If I can attach some vids, you can see the stability for yourself, but basically I took it out on some of our really lousy roads, which are full of scars, holes, pits, etc., and I was really impressed with how stable the image was, considering that the surface was far from smooth. The amount of travel in the tire clearly showed how bumpy the road was, while the view itself stayed quite stable. I'm very impressed.
So, it seems I have to post this review, then go back to it later and add the video, so I will try to do that. If there is no video, haha, it means I couldn't figure out their process -- when you click on "Add photos/videos" that doesn't work, of course, for a video, so, Amazon should fix that, but, hopefully I can get a video on here so you can see the stability of this Joby Action Arm.
In summary, this arm is the BEST. Plenty of positional options for how you want to get your image, super easy to set up, with one center control knob to tighten down both ends (at the cup, and at the camera), once you're happy with where you have it set and, the two best features -- it stays where you put it, and absorbs vibrations.
I couldn't be happier, and I think Joby knocked it out of the ballpark on this one. I wouldn't go with any other mounting option, other than this one.
I highly recommend!!!
UPDATE: Amazon has some glitch going -- the video upload button doesn't work. I can load pics, but not vids, for whatever reason. Seems others have had this issue as well. I will contact Amazon for a fix, and, if they provide one, I will post the vid later. If they don't provide one, then I will just say again that the stability is great.
UPDATE #2: So, Amazon didn't solve the video issue, and customer service actually should get educated on this, but I figured it out. As others have noted, it's odd that there is no assistance for loading a video review, since Amazon itself has been encouraging them of late. Turns out the information (of what little they provide) is wrong, unfortunately. They state that .wmv is an accepted format, but it is not, and no error message shows up when trying to load -- it simply doesn't load, with no explanation, as if the button just isn't working. So, I did a few tests and found that the .mp4 extension works fine, and I used the free Handbrake conversion software to convert the video, since the Yi Cam that I'm using defaults to .wmv for its videos (although I'll see, in the future, if I can change that to .mp4).
As mentioned already, and as tire travel shows, this is not at all a smooth road, but the Joby arm did a great job of keeping things steady. There is a degree of image stabilization on the camera, but, using a different mount, inside, on the windshield, the video was much less stable, so clearly the Joby arm is the superior option. I can only load one video, so I can't show a comparison unless I did a production to do so, but mainly here I just wanted to show the stability achieved with this phenomenal mount system.
