Quality Product and Superior Customer Support
I'll give you my history with the product first, then tell you about my experience:10 months ago in October, 2016, I bought three RAM units: 1) the "Ram Mount Twist Lock Suction Cup Mount with Universal X-Grip Cell Phone Holder, Black, RAM-B-166-UN7U", 2) the "RAM Yoke Clamp Mount with Universal X-Grip(TM) Holder for Small Tablets" and 3) the "Ram Mount Double Socket Swivel Arm for 1-Inch Ball Bases". I interchange the X-Grip Mounts and arms on my cell phone and iPad Mini 4 with the suction cup mount frequently for use in both my automobile and in my aircraft. I've found this type of attachment to be the most useful, but the clamp mount that came with the iPad Mini 4 X-Grip also works well in the plane. I waited to write a review because I wanted time with the product to determine what I thought. I'm writing the review today because of a great customer service experience I recently had with the company. All of the RAM components appear to be well built. They are a combination of cast aluminum and hard (though not brittle) plastics along with rubber where needed to adhere to surfaces and/or grip devices. I'm picky about build quality and while a superior build quality to this type of product is possible, I believe the quality of the RAM product to be better than anything else I've seen and perfectly adequate for the job at hand. So far, all major components have held up well. What triggered this review today was an issue I ran into with the X-Grip suction cup cell phone mount. I experienced two minor problems: 1) the clear coating on the rubber suction cup itself began to peel and 2) one of the rubber x-grip post caps split and fell off. Any product can have something happen, so I simply called RAM (National Products Incorporated) and told them about it. The customer support agent with whom I spoke, directed me to a product replacement request page on their web site and helped me to complete it (Note: RAM asks for a copy of your invoice. I had mine from Amazon, but I got the impression from the agent that it was no big deal if I hadn't). I quickly filled out the request with a brief explanation of what had happened. Today - 4/5 days later, I received - at no charge - a package with replacement parts. RAM claims to stand behind their product and today I found that the company in-fact, does do exactly that.Based on my experience using the product and the customer support provided to me when I experienced a minor issue, I'll recommend RAM Mounts to anyone looking for this type of accessory. And when I have this type of need again, I'll look back to RAM first for a solution. If they have one, I'll buy again.

I own a Ram X-Grip which I have used on my motorcycle for a couple of years, with a similar set-up using a shorter extension arm and (of course) a different mount on the bike. It has been a stable platform on my bike, so when I bought a new-to-me pickup truck, I decided to try this rig. Previously, I have always invested in the pricey proprietary car docks for my Motorola phones, and of course, as soon as I replace them, those docks are obsolete. No such issues with this one, and I can use it for as long as I don't get a larger phone (I'm almost in the phablet zone as it is) and as long as it is structurally intact, which I anticipate will be a while. The suction cup, arm and X-Grip are all available separately as well, should you already have some Ram components. And with this modular construction, this set up can be modified readily using the large catalog of other Ram ball parts, making it highly adaptable to multiple uses, even to getting a larger X-Grip for my future phablet needs.

The set up is solid, and I've noticed no wobble even on rougher two tracks. This X-Grip is improved on my earlier one, and has no movement with a phone docked; with a phone engaged, the earlier model had some rotational play (10 degrees or so, or about an hour on a clock face) which could change the orientation of the phone when say, taking a turn on the fast side. This simply is not an issue with this version of the X-Grip, so Ram seems to have responded to the criticisms of its earlier product. Size wise, this model works well with my LG G2 in its huge-moungous Otterbox. The little rubber caps on the ends of the metal brackets do come off, and this can provide a little more clearance if necessary, but I prefer the additional "grippiness" they provide. I have on one occasion removed one accidentally on my older X-Grip, but they seem to be pretty solidly attached for the most part - I don't think I take undue care in mounting or retrieving the phone.

The ball mounts on both ends make this quite easy to adjust - just untighten the center screw on the arm, position everything where you want it, and tighten it back down, and done. The suction cup mount is rock solid, and though I've only had this for week, it has held from temperatures from the 30s to the 90s, and in light offroad and highway driving. The twist-lock is one of the most solid ways of attaching to a windshield that I've seen. The cup mount does require a trivial bit of assembly (two self-tapping Philips head screws to mount the Ram ball), and beware, it is a bit larger than the photos make it appear. It is a quite substantial unit, partly due to its mounting mechanism. The size, modular components, and general aspect give it a kind of retro high tech look. Some might call it phugly, but I call it a highly phunctional and adaptable piece of hardware with a classic look that should serve me for years to come.

Besides the potential aesthetic objections, it is also relatively pricey (2 to 4 times as much) compared to some other mounts. My feeling is that these are high quality components, and given the great flexibility the system has for adapting to other mounts and components, price is not an issue. The price is not at all extreme, and is less than the factory car docks I mentioned earlier. Another issue that some might raise is that it will take two hands to get your phone in and out of the X-Grip. My practice is that as long as the car is moving, it stays in the dock anyway, so for me, this is a non-issue. I've placed it such that using both hands is not a problem.

To sum up, I highly recommend this as solution for for your car-docking needs. It is solid and adaptable, and should outlast your next few phones.

I've tried half a dozen or so different phone mounts for cars, and I have so far been disappointed with the results. Not being a motorcycle driver, I had never heard of RAM products before. They offer a wide range of mounts for bikes and off-the-road vehicles; it seemed like a good bet that their products could also work for the average suburban passenger car. After watching several of their product videos, I decided it was worth trying the X-Grip Holder to see if it might be a good solution.

I couldn't be happier. The construction is sturdy, including a solid metal connecting plate that screws onto the thick plastic cup that forms the socket for the heavy duty suction cup. My first concern was that with that much weight in just the mount, would it be too heavy to stay on the window once the phone was added? Not a problem; not only is the suction cup up to the challenge, but the sturdy construction of the mount means that less vibration is transmitted to the phone. Even though the mount I ordered comes with a 4" arm to ensure that the phone will be far enough away from the window, the arm locking mechanism ensures that the phone remains as rock steady as if it was glued directly to the dash.

The X-Grip Holder itself at the business end of the mount is perfect for what I wanted. I have used my iPhones with Mophie battery cases (another great product, BTW), which add a certain amount of weight and thickness to my phone. Any mount that is custom-made for the iPhone simply won't extend far enough to also securely hold the phone with the added battery case. The X-Grip Holder, however, is perfect for a wide range of widths and sizes. If you look carefully at the picture for the X-Grip, you can see that the four rubber (foam-rubber?) tips that make up the gripping surfaces of the X-Grip are tapered. They are conical in shape -- thick at the outermost end and narrow at the base of the cradle. That tapered shape ensures that the phone is firmly pushed down into the center of the cradle. Even a thicker phone with a battery case will easily fit snugly within the tapered grips, and the clamping action of the X-Grip ensures that that the phone can't shift or pop out of the cradle. Because the X-Grip involves only 4 points of contact, it is very easy to adjust the position of the phone up or down just a bit to ensure that all critical buttons and ports are left unobstructed.

Finally, as you can see in any of the product videos on YouTube, the X-Grip clamps the phone securely, but is very easy to release just by pinching two of the rubber tips toward each other. Getting the phone in and out is easy, but while it's in place, it is not going anywhere until you want to take it out again.

Do note that the suction cup is 3 and 3/8" in diameter. If you want to use one of those flat plastic mounting discs on your dash to hold the phone instead of putting it on the window, make sure to get one of the 90mm discs, as smaller ones are too small for the suction cup.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surely the best mount I ever add
Reviewed in Canada on November 11, 2023
It is sturdy, has a super suction system, lots of metal parts, and thick plastics. If I find it a bit massive to instal in the windshield - it blocks quite a lot of visibility, it installs well on the dash. When there are vibrations, it is not the mount that vibrate, it's the dash itself. Yes, it quite expensive, I agree, but in the long run, I hope I'll never buy another mount because of a break. So, it's worth its price.
