I thoroughly enjoyed reading Sufferborn. High fantasy is not the genre that I usually read. I don't know much about Elf lore, but the romance and adventure drew me to it.
Kalea lived a sheltered life in a convent where she grew up, and planned to live, the rest of her life. She encounters an Elf, Dorhen, while in town one day and that changes her life forever. The World of Kaihals is occupied by humans and elves each living in their own kingdoms with limited interaction between them. This encounter is the beginning of drastic change for both lives. The adventure takes place as sorcerers wreak havoc on the Lightlands separating Kalea and Dorhen during a violent attack on the convent where Kalea lived.
The story drew me in because, like Kalea, I found Dorhen intriguing. His family history and nomadic life adds to his allure. All of the characters are well developed and the author gives you insight into their choices as the story develops. The story is full of action, magic, betrayal, intrigue and internal turmoil. It keeps you turning pages even when you should be doing other things. It is definitely written for adults and does have sexual content as part of the overall story.
Not being familiar with Elf lore it was very helpful to have the glossary with Elvish pronunciation. The Author is also an artist so the book has a map, illustrations and beautiful cover art. For me the cover is a deciding factor in my choice whether to read a book or not.
This book was a very good read and I am greatly looking forward to the next installment of the story. Kalea and Dorhen live in a world that ignites my imagination and carries me away for a bit of adventure .
