Sugar Busters! was first independently published in New Orleans and sold an amazing 100,000 copies by word of mouth. Its advice may be hard to swallow for most Americans, as it advocates squelching your sweet tooth in order to lose weight. Those who follow the diet, however, swear by it, and no wonder: excess sugar consumption has been linked to depression, impaired immune function, and, of course, weight gain, as the body can almost effortlessly convert sugar to fat. Because sugar comes in so many different forms and hides out in unexpected places (carrots, beets, and white bread, among others) the authors list what foods are safe and which ones should be avoided and include a two-week menu plan for getting started. They also tempt the taste buds with recipes for unheard-of "diet" dishes such as Eggs Sardou and Filet Mignon with Bleu Cheese.
This book will be too basic for anyone with a solid knowledge of nutrition, but for those who are overdoing the sweet stuff and want some handholding and help with shedding excess weight, Sugar Busters! can do nothing but help.

My mother has been dieting ever since I can remember. When I was nine she had lost fifty pounds and was working as a lecturer for Weight Watchers. Eventually, she gained all the weight (and more) back again, and after many attempts at diets that didn't work, she resigned herself to being a "yo-yo" dieter--someone who can lose weight, but simply can't keep it off, usually gaining back more than originally lost. Why am I telling you this? Because three months ago I gave her a copy of Sugar Busters, not because I thought she should go on another diet, but because I wanted her to take a good look at her eating habits, and realize how they were affecting her quality of life. I had noticed that she would not really eat too much at meal time, but that she often had sweets inbetween, and almost always had dessert. And always had heartburn and stomach problems.
She's lost over 25 pounds since Mother's Day, and hasn't had a twitch of heartburn. She doesn't follow a strict "you can never eat anything tasty ever again" diet, but moderates her habits and is really getting an enormous kick out of being in control. If you actually read the whole thing, you'll have a good understanding of why a) massive carb intake is making you fat and b) how absurd our accepted dietary thinking has been for a long time.
If you were thinking Atkins but either a) couldn't stay on it or b) could not fathom sticking to those menu choices for an extended period of time, I'd suggest this. Not as an easy way out--if you're going to do this, you have to do it right--but as perhaps less of a shock to the system.
I've been on a pretty faithful Atkins routine for two weeks now and it really has worked as promised. And you do feel better with regard to energy swings (no more post-lunch food comas). But one week in, I new there was no way I continually eat this way for any extended period of time. Hence this book.
After you've read this, you will never look at, say, white bread or potatoes the same way again!
The diet is great! The book is easy to understand and really breaks the "calorie" myth. Lost 4 lbs in 3 weeks! 8 to go!!
