Sugar & Gold (Dreamcatcher) Kindle Edition
At nineteen, Fiona Starling was trapped in an ugly, desperate situation until she freed herself the only way she knew how. Now three years later, living outside Savannah, Georgia, she is rebuilding her life on her own terms; seizing every moment and saving every penny so that she might fulfill her dream of moving to the raw wilderness of Costa Rica. But behind her carefree smile beats the heart of a lonely young woman haunted by her past, until a chance encounter with a tattooed stranger changes everything…
Fiona takes Nikolai under her roof for three sultry nights, waiting out the rain of a summer storm. She grows more and more fascinated by this brooding stranger with whom she shares an intense physical connection—a connection so strong, she wonders if there is something between them beyond lust and passion. Nikolai is shocked to discover that Fiona calms the raging turmoil in his heart. She alone silences the din of other people’s lives, and envelops him in the sweet beauty of her inner self. Every moment he’s with her—every touch of her skin—brings him closer to the peace that’s been eluding him his entire life.
But Fiona harbors secrets that she is too terrified to reveal. After Nikolai confesses his unique ability, she is caught between wanting to believe him and fearing he’ll eventually unearth her own dark past. Here's a bit of the plot, but no big spoilers. Our hero (Nikolai) has the rare ability to "feel" what other people are feeling. Through the "ken," he perceives their emotions in colors, sounds, smells, and even taste. "I don't stay long in one place because I know too much. The longer I'm around someone, the more is exposed to me. And they never know." So he keeps moving, traveling back and forth across the country on his motorcycle, winning money in poker games because he can easily read the "tells" of the other players. But Nikolai hates the "ken" and the life he's forced to live, constantly feeling the pain of other people. Covered in tattoos, he relishes ". . . the bite of the needle in my skin because only then do I know it's mine. My pain . . . and for a few minutes, I belong to myself. No one else."
Our heroine (Fiona) fled to Garden City, Georgia, two years ago to escape from her abusive husband (Steve). Craving a one-night stand, she goes to a bar and attracts the attention of Nikolai, who senses something unusual in ". . . the bright halo of glimmering dust that surrounded her. Kindness, compassion, charity." Declaring she's the most beautiful woman he's ever seen, he goes to her place for a night of wild sex that temporarily silences the ken's usual noise. He revels in the silence, the "absolute quiet of the world that now consisted of only her and me." Their one-night stand stretches to a three-day fling that's filled with lots of explicit sex, consuming the first 30% of the book. (To be honest, I didn't care for Fiona at this point. Why would an abused young woman decide to pick up a pierced and tatted stranger at a bar and take him home for sex? Seemed downright foolish to me.)
Nikolai hits the road again, but he can't stay away for long. He returns to Garden City, rents an apartment, and resumes a passionate relationship with Fiona. He senses the pain she's hiding, but she won't talk about the abuse she suffered. And he hesitates to tell her the truth about the ken. "Her past. My affliction. They stood in the way of this. Us. And as scared as I was to lose her, I knew I would have to tell her."
So he does. He tells her how he feels "other peoples' emotions--their lives cracked open to me like an egg, spilling out in front of me." But Fiona doesn't believe him. And when he grasps her wrist and sees the darkest secrets of Steve's abuse, she reacts in horror, convinced that Nikolai knows Steve. How else could he know the details of her past? Fearing that Steve could be on his way to Garden City, Fiona panics. Nikolai has never lied to her, but she refuses to believe him, certain that "every emotion I'd had over the last weeks had been the product of someone else's manipulation." Ignoring Nikolai's texts and calls, she drives toward the beach and hits . . .
I'm going no further, except to say that Part III--The Black Prince--is an emotional roller coaster that stole my breath with every twist and turn. With consummate skill, the author pulls each plot thread together to reach a perfect ending. With professional proofreading, immersive scenery, and unforgettable characters (including Evan!), this extraordinary story deserves "a gratitude greater than thank you" and FIVE MAGICAL STARS!
It is hard to sum up what this book is about with no spoilers – I am not even going to try. The good news is Emma Scott has a very extensive and detailed synopsis so after reading that, you should have a very good idea what Sugar & Gold is about and whether it intrigues your curious mind. I will say this book’s GOT ALL THE FEELS and it’s a MUST READ. This is a very intense and emotional love story as expected in all of Emma’s previous books so get some tissues ready. I was really sobbing in the middle of the night and I could not stop reading. Don’t fret – there are also plenty of sweet, light-hearted banters, and sexy moments as well.
“For love. And when it’s for love, there ain’t no mountain high enough.”
I love the way Nikolai and Fiona met – Nikolai was nursing a lonely heart at a bar and in comes walking a vision in pink (that’s what he sees in Fiona). What is supposed to be a night of rolling in the hay turns into a very complicated, whirlwind romance. Fiona is easy to love – kind, caring and compassionate. She was dealt shitty cards and life isn’t easy but it hasn’t hardened her heart. She lives with the haunted thoughts daily but her spirit is still vibrant and that’s exactly what Nikolai sees in Fiona – beautiful inside and out. Nikolai – my heart breaks for him. Nikolai’s upbringing is sad and torturous. He is running from everyone including himself, hiding behind tattoos and piercings, never settling down or letting anyone get close (although said tats and pierces make him a pretty damn hot sex god ). The character’s development is quite remarkable. These two characters are both damaged seemingly beyond repair but they found each other and with trust and love they were able to find the real person within (and ultimately their own version of sunshine). On a lighter note, I think the author did an awesome job with the chemistry between Nikoli and Fiona. There is no denying the sparks and attraction between them. I like that Nikolai and Fiona are very honest with each others feelings. There is no game playing between them which is not surprising because they have been through so much heartache, they only want true happiness for one another. The part at the end where Nikolai came to the rescue practically melted my heart and my panties – totally swoony and showcased his bravery, a quality I admire about this hero. I also enjoyed all the side characters especially Nate and Griff – such sweet, fun, adorable couples, and even the mother hen Opal was absolutely lovely.
As you know Gold & Sugar is part of the Dreamcatcher series which has a touch of paranormal elements. If you have any reservations about reading this genre, I will say this: Does Nikolai’s ability to feel or see people in color and sounds seem far fetched? Absolutely, but personally I think we can all relate to this hidden talent in some ways. Why are we drawn to certain people but not others? I think Nikolai’s gift is no different than one’s ability to read, feel, and understand people we meet. It’s an intuition if you will – your way of knowing whether to trust people or to form relationships or not. That’s just my personal opinion!
Sugar & Gold is just simply GORGEOUS. Period! The story, the characters, the narrative, the dialogues – everything about it was delivered with such care through her elegant writing. Reading Emma’s book is a magical experience. I was in awe and once again speechless when I finished. The epilogue – “Ostavat’sya” – I can’t even! I was once again a sobbing mess. Truly, Sugar & Gold is a stunning – a gorgeous love story but also a poignant heartfelt story of a young couple who rose above all odds, found their sunshine, and are finally free.
“Love and hope.”
“She had given so much of both; my heart was full of love for her…and a gratitude greater than thank you.”

The characters, their connection & how they developed through their journey was so damned beautiful. Through past hurt, pain & suffering emerged two individuals, who came together in an explosion of colour, love & emotion.
The writing was absolutely exceptional, seriously, I spent most of my time closing my eyes & SEEING what Emma wanted to show me through her words. I was wrapped in a love so vibrant & alive, it felt like I could touch it. A love so pure & perfect, it filled my heart to the brim with joy & unconditional love for this pair & the future the both truly deserved.
Their journey wasn't always an easy one though & individually both Nikolai & Fiona had to face their demons in order to claim the life they yearned for. My heart hurt big time for them both as the emotions flowed, so raw yet precious. They carried a depth & understanding, & showed me just how much their strength, courage & love would lead them to a magnificent & beautiful life where they could finally ‘just be’ - forever. Sigh - perfect in every way.
One of my top reads this year & two very special people I’ll never forget, my very own Sugar & Gold
But… I can't finish this review without mentioning the appearance by Evan. This man, omg I was so happy to see him & loved his role in this story!! For me it brought everything full circle. It was like glitter sprinkles on your favourite cupcake - it turned my happy smile into the biggest face splitting smile possible. Don't get me wrong you can read this 100% as a stand alone, but I'm personally super happy I had already read How to Save A Life because i felt like I was given the chance to say hello to old friends. One very very happy girl right here <3
