She's his best friend's little sister. He's known her all his life. He's practically part of the family. There is nothing either of them could do to surprise the other at this point. Then she showed up in his bedroom in lingerie and asked him to take her V-card.
Okay, that was a surprise.
Aiden is pretty sure Zoe was equally surprised when he told her no.
To say that he didn't handle it well would be a massive understatement. Almost as massive as the amount of work he's going to have to do now to convince her that he wants her. Forever.
Right after he tells her that he's bought the company that's her bakery’s biggest competitor.
Maybe if he tells her he’s in love with her first, that will help sugarcoat the whole we're-rivals-in-business-now thing.
So, first "I'm in love with you", then "take off your clothes", then "I'm now your business adversary".
Sure. Piece of cake.

About the author

Erin Nicholas is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of over thirty sexy contemporary romances. Her stories have been described as toe-curling, enchanting, steamy and fun. She loves to write about reluctant heroes, imperfect heroines and happily ever afters. She lives in the Midwest with her husband who only wants to read the sex scenes in her books, her kids who will never read the sex scenes in her books, and family and friends who say they’re shocked by the sex scenes in her books (yeah, right!).

Zoe owns and operates the local bakery that has been in her family for generations. It is the same as when it was first established except for a few minor updates. Zoe, to me, seems stuck in old family traditions. She is afraid to step out and do something different for fear of failure and looking like a fool. There is an old family feud that has been going on for decades. Zoe's bitter enemy is the local baking products for fast snacks with long life. The difference is that her products are fresh and made by an actual baker, the enemy makes bakery items for sell to big companies for resell. They have a lot of preservatives and last for days maybe weeks. They sell in the local 7/11, gas stations, etc. They are good, everybody loves them, they are cheaper than bakery items.
Aiden is a local boy made good. He and his 4 partners created a great game and then sold it for millions. They are a good team with each having their own talent that makes the team work. They are sort of at loose ends now that their game has sold and they really have nothing to do. None of them really needs to work again but they are too young to sit around and do nothing. They are all millionaires.
Hot Cakes is up for sale. Aiden wants to buy it but there is a problem with Zoe hating the family that owns it and she feels like they are her competitor. Zoe is young but she actually acts like a bitter old maid spinster. She bears a grudge against the company and the family that owns it and she has no idea what the grudge is all about. I just felt like she was rather selfish, hoping the company would fail when over 300 locals depend on it for their livelihood. Without it, the town would probably fold because there are no job opportunities and these people depend on their jobs. She seems to only be concerned about her own welfare. She doesn't realize that if those 300 have to go elsewhere for work, her business will probably fail as well.
Aiden on the other hand wants to buy the company, upgrade the factory, increase employee benefits and make it a place that people want to go to work each day. He is definitely the hero. He wants to save his town. So, he and Zoe have a lot to work through. She is willful, not willing to see past her nose and generally an unpleasant person until....
It is a good story and I definitely recommend it. It has a HEA with a little bit of the next two characters to come together. I thought the ending was different from what I wanted to see. I didn't see that he owed her anything. She was an unpleasant, controlling person and why he would want to be like her was beyond me. It seems like it is always the men groveling when the woman was as much or more to blame for their misunderstanding. If she had been a bit softer, maybe he would have been able to talk to her and not be AFRAID of her reaction even though he knew what it was going to be. But, that is just me. Probably why I'm not a writer :-)
I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 3/29/2020
Aiden might be a big city millionaire, but his heart is back in his small Iowa town. He turned down Zoe wanting a one nightstand, but that was the moment that set him to thinking of her as more than Cam's little sister. Now, he's back in town with a dual agenda. Start a committed relationship with Zoe and buy the failing snack cake factory that many in the town depend on for their livelihood. The catch? Zoe considers Hot Cakes to be the business rival and enemy of her family-owned bakery.
Sugarcoated is packaged as a sweet and spicy small town romantic comedy and it was just as described. There's a trope blend of bestfriend's younger sister, business rivalry-style enemies to lovers. I enjoyed the light and sassy tone from the start and the banter was hilarious and well done whether it was Zoe and Aiden or Zoe and her two besties. Even in the opening scene when Zoe felt awkward and a little odd, I thought there was good comedy.
But, this book produced mixed feelings. I was not impressed with Aiden's determination to have a meaningful relationship with Zoe, but keeping a very big secret from her that he and his partners are buying Hot Cakes. I could appreciate that he wanted to try to get her to be open-minded, but it felt a little underhanded even if he was totally on her side and fully supportive of her own bakery- even helping out when she needed an extra hand or good business advice. Zoe also got to me with her insistence on the old family grudge with no real reason for it- her little mom and pop bakery that made specialty cakes, muffins, cookies, and cake pops wasn't even being rivaled by a packaged sweets company like Hostess or Little Debbie. Felt a little contrived.
To be fair to both, they realize they are wrong on their separate issues and don't make a big production of getting things worked out. Largely, her friends and his friends give fab advice and helpful nudges to both of them.
For a romance involving a virgin, this was steamy and flirty in all the fun ways. I could easily be convinced that cake toppings and fillings could be marketed and sold at adult sex stores right beside the vibrators. They might have difficulty in other areas of starting a relationship, but they connected from the start when they got physical which led them to a stronger, deeper bond as they went.
All in all, it was sassy and fun and I enjoyed the author's light and airy writing style. I enjoyed the larger cast of characters and the Hot Cakes series setting so I'd eagerly pick up other books in the series. RomCom fans should give it a look see.
