Westerners believe in rational thought as if such were the natural way of man, but Jihadists live by an unquestioned set of rules and demand total obedience to them. This gives the Jihadist an advantage whenever their ways and Western thought come into conflict. The Jihadists do not need to produce reasoned arguments in support of their dogmas. The Jihadist needs simply assert, and that assertion cuts off all possible debate amongst their followers.
The author, Lee Harris, sums up: "In short, there are two great threats facing the survival of the modern liberal West. The first is its exaggerated confidence in the power of reason; the second is its profound underestimation of the forces of fanaticism."
Easy to read and detailed in its analysis, this book is worth a read by anyone seeking deeper insight into the reason why fanatical Islam hasn't long ago crumbled and vanished into history in the face of Western criticism and political opposition.
