Editorial Reviews

With “Suicide Society”, Annihilator goes headfirst into some of the most technically perfect, crisp, and crushingly taut, riffage Waters has ever produced. Although Waters’ vocals keep traces of stylings from his “King of the Kill” album, they now evoke a surprising blend of legends such as Staley, Osbourne, Hetfield and Mustaine. This, in a twisted way, mirrors Waters’ signature blend of riffing, drums grooves and bass; all drawing from multiple sources and genres. Waters has built a worldwide reputation as being a premier guitarist and songwriter; the conciseness and arrangement of “Creepin’ Again” is both an air-guitarist’s dream and a sharp reminder of this. The gloriously-brutal thrash of “My Revenge” calls up a vintage of ’85 with the technical chops of 2015. The neo-classic title track defiantly expresses anger at the state of world affairs, while offering up hope in closing. With the multi-layered power of the anthem “Snap”, Waters illustrates the diversity of Annihilator’s sound, without sacrificing one decibel of attack. Metal fans all across the world are aware of Annihilator’s stellar, energetic and “real” live shows. Drum monster Mike Harshaw continues on for his 4th year with the band, one familiar name returns & another is born: bassist Cam Dixon (from “King of the Kill” era) returns to the fold & guitarist Aaron Homma makes his debut with the band. Annihilator is back again with another very solid album all around. With 2015's "Suicide Society" they seem to be evolving, but are still hanging on to some of their thrash roots for which they're known so well.
The album has few weak tracks (which, let's face it, most albums tend to have a few flops) yet, they're still enjoyable at least. They seem to have moved in a direction that some people might say is "more commercialized", and they might be right, as the album does have a couple songs that are more accessible to those that may not be into Annihilator, (like "Suicide Society" and "Snap") but it's not necessarily a bad thing considering those are 2 stand out tracks on the album for me.
As disappointed as Dave Padden fans may be about his departure, I feel Jeff Waters has done a great job stepping back into the spotlight for lead vocals as he has done in the past, his style is less harsh and more melodic than Padden, which I enjoy. The album almost has a punk/thrash style to it, and that tends to work well for them.
Most, if not all the songs here, have potential to grow on you in a very short amount of time, and leave you wondering "why haven't they written this already?". It's nice they've included some re-done songs here, along with some interesting short commentary by Jeff Waters. I feel like the album falls just short of the 5 star mark, due to a few loose screws, notably with the songs "Creepin' Again" and "Every Minute" which feel a little generic, along with some uninspired chunk riffing at a few points in the album.

Another attempt at commercial metal. Jeff's been around long enough to know that this is wrong. Unbearable, cheesy lyrics, mostly-decent vocals, same old riffs and licks. The sound isn't brickwalled like most of today's albums, but the mix does suffer from too much midrange.

Very different... The title track is just plain silly. The video is even worse. And Jeff back on vocals ALWAYS leaves something-to-be-desired. He's SOO talented at playing and writing, but just average at singing. In fact, the bonus disc is the best part of this release! I love ANNIHILATOR and always will, but this latest release just lacks the punch and power that they usually bring. Just a dull, boring and lifeless effort IMO.

Great comeback album, although they never left, just way to many member changes. The original singer/guitarist is back and sound great. His riffs/vocals are very reminiscent of Dave Mustaine, and sometimes he sounds just like him. Although in my opinion he's a much better guitarist. And also does have his own unique voice, when he sings with very much versatility. Also on track number 2 My Revenge he pays homage to Metallica with the song sounding just like Damage Inc. and it kicks some major a$$. Just with different lyrics and hooks. All the songs have their own entity and all have a unique creative old school/with a new school vibe sound. I won't get really deep into it, suffice to say one of the best mainstream thrash albums this year. Period. And i doubt it will be beaten. The more you listen, the more you're hooked. Dare I say this is the best Annihilator has ever done? Maybe so. Also Metallic-who? Slayer who, or as I call them Sailor. Only 2 other big 4 who have yet to prove anything to us. These guys are the same age, and still sound either the same or ever better than in the 80's. Goes to show you, the underground is where it's still at. Testament, Overkill, Hatchet, Kreator etc. give us more. :)
