It's been a while since I've read a fun, fast-paced and very entertaining book centered on one of my least favorite subjects: baseball. That should tell you how riveted I was by R. W. Bennett's second novel (following "Love.com"). "Suicide Squeeze" introduces Mark 'Mercury' Mercer, a refreshingly atypical character: a dashing, cultured baseball-player/marathon runner who grabs readers and races them through bombings, murder plots, romantic twists and an incident in Boston that is chilling to read after the tragic events of this year.
Mr. Bennett is stellar in his vivid descriptions of his character's backdrops: Mercer's sprawling mansion in the western coast of Florida, his mother's place in West Virginia and his pad in Boston. As a key baseball player, all of these places are Mercer's launch pads for training and active baseball seasons, and all harbor people and things that are close to his heart and are soon in the path of very serious threats. As the plot moves forward Mercer runs, bats, drinks and plays a mean piano. Mr. Bennett has created a very believable character who is charming in spite of his flaws (a bit of a reluctant womanizer but easily forgiven based on his looks and ability to play American Standards as he sips rare scotch). His supporting characters are distinctive and add humanizing touches to make Mercer a very likable and well-rounded main voice. From Mercer's somewhat aloof, elegant mother to his hilarious team mates, to his protégé Carlos Chavez (an interesting character that could have his own spinoff), his love interests, agent, managers and daughter, everything and everyone build up to a solid cast that can keep readers entertained for a good, long series of books.
It's hard to describe the plot without giving away major spoilers, but in a nutshell, "Suicide Squeeze" is the debut of a new American hero in the midst of a major national threat that echoes our times. Congratulations, Mr. Bennett, for a home run!
