I immediately think of "pale Hecate" in "Macbeth" when I peek through the virtual keyhole at these granddaughters of punk -- but I'm a Renaissance man, and this warps my worldview. And what an eyeful one gets as these latter day temple prostitutes ply their trade in modern cyberspace by "redefining femininity, one hot naked chick at a time." That's a great line, but is it actually true?
Many reviewers insist that Bettie Page was the original Suicide Girl. I agree. Joan Jett also comes to mind. And Madonna was another pioneer, but her initial, radioactive bad-girl persona (of MTV fame) is now a dim memory. Nevertheless, our fascination with the classic image of the "femme fatale" endures. And we wonder what draws us toward this deadly spider? Is it the macabre blend of Eros and Thanatos, all rolled into one compact bundle of feminine charm? Or do we secretly desire a luscious aspect of the Terrible Mother -- with pierced flesh and tattoos -- doing what amounts to a lap dance on our computer screen?
If we look back in time, the Triple Goddess once embodied the three phases of feminine existence, i.e., Virgin-Nymph-Crone. Any woman worth her salt can still play each and every part -- thus most modern men remain as hoodwinked by the Triple Goddess (it's in our heads) as ever. Her tentacles are inescapable -- even if we hide behind science or religion. For in our Neoplatonic/Judeo-Christian world of unconscious necrophilia the Blue Angel is waiting to draw our ego down into the degradation we seek -- wallowing in the arms of the "Scarlet Woman."
Happy Halloween!
O' the Maenads of the Bacchae, the Harpies, the lamias, the witches of the Walpurgis Night, men have always had a weakness for these naughty femmes -- even though we know that we will eventually be shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods.
Nevertheless, here's some fatherly advice for the Suicide Girls -- who might enjoy an affectionate spank on their comely bottoms. Youth is fleeting. Enjoy it while you can. And the privileges of beauty are enormous. So make hay while you may. But nothing lasts, so there's little need for suicide. Most of us hardly have time to weep as we peer into the abyss.
Now, yes, I admit, the binding, quality of the paper and printing (ergo: everything not having to do with content) is fairly good, but let's be real! You wouldn't buy the thing if it was a bunch of ink jet prints on a three ring binder, would you?
The content, that's another story. Let me explain:
(1) The models are attractive young women who are not necessarily the typical Barbie model you find on most nude photography books, that was, perhaps, the biggest plus of the book. But they aren't either the "typical" goth/emo girl out there. Indeed, far from it.
(2) The photography style is very amateurish! Yeah, I am an amateur photographer myself, and maybe I wouldn't do a better job (and would have a harder time to find so many girls who want to pose naked for me), but I am not selling average pin up pictures as top notch counter culture nude photography! Nothing really memorable about the photographic technique.
(3) The girls, the poses and the backgrounds (all in doors) are relatively OK, but not much more than that. It looks like a slumber party of legal aged young ladies, mostly tattooed, who got curious with a camera, took a few thousand pictures during a weekend, and then picked the top 10%. Most of them are average, at most, a few are a bit above average, and for me, just two are memorable! (lower left corner on page 44, Rose's back, being the one I liked the most, curiously enough, a 2'x2' print only!).
Not really erotic, not really artistic, at least on my opinion. Having such a repertoire of beautiful tattooed women, they could have done a lot better job. I, for once, am not impressed. Indeed, I'm probably removing the rest of their books from my wish list!
- The photos aren't very artistic. They're simple and straightforward, shot with a standard digital camera.
- It's arranged rather simply, with little or no thought to the placement of the images. (Usually two images side by side per page)
- True, you can probably find a lot of similar images on the internet.
- Some of the girls are absolutely beautiful, but I find some rather unattractive.
- The quality of the pictures is rather poor, since the original intent of SG was purely online. So the change from pixels to print never translates well.
- There's very little about the girls themselves... just short, self-written bio's on some of the girls in the back.
- Let's be honest... you're just buying this for the boobies of cute indie chicks... and that's okay.
After a couple viewings, it doesn't have a lasting effect that the likes of Tony Ward or maybe Richard Kern's work might have. Less art and more taboo. It's an inexpensive book, so if you're into the whole naked chicks with tattoos and piercing, I'd say go for it.
In short, hubba-hubba.

However, the image that this book puts forward is somewhat misleading.
On the back of the book quotes like "... unique take on the glamour of Photography" but there is very little that is unique about the models, the way they are photographed and the info part about them is rather shallow and not very satisfying.
Also the book is much too short and I would have preferred it if it had been twice as long.
A rather well put together if ultimately pointless collection of photographs.
Great snaps of alternative tattooed girls. Not too vulgar, but some nudity.
