Editorial Reviews
Review
"A thoughtfully layered text and powerful illustrations address this sensitive topic [of colorism] in a uniquely nurturing way." ― Kirkus Reviews, starred review
*"By turns beguiling (as when Sulwe’s mother counsels her tearful daughter) and magical (a shooting star darts into Sulwe’s room to share the story of Night and Day), the volume also clearly conveys that colorism is real, and it hurts. Sulwe’s story confronts it head-on, with words and images that celebrate the 'dark and beautiful, bright and strong.'" ― Publishers Weekly, starred review
"A welcome celebration of Black girls, an important lesson for all kids (and grownups), and a necessary message for any child who has been made to feel unworthy of love on account of their looks." ― Booklist

This book is beautifully written and illustrated. Little Sulwe tackles her self love and worth. Sulwe is trying to figure out “why” she is the color of midnight? This book brings up colorism in the black community. This is definitely a conversation starter in the Black home.

I personally experienced this in my community I identified strongly with Sulwe. I am 72 years old, yet I still remember the pain of feeling different for my thinnest, my height and my darker complexion. My sister who was a year older with a thicker figure and a lighter complexion teased me often about it. I learned to not be upset with others since she criticized me so much! This is a great book for kids to read. The knowledge of this book will empower them!

I really enjoyed this book. I’m also glad that Lupita graced the world with her midnight beauty. This is a great book for all children of color ranging from day to night.

What an amazing read! We love Sulwe so much! The only downside is there’s no sweet sweet Sulwe doll to hug. “I just want to hug her momma. She’s so beautiful and so sad.” Although the ending leaves Sulwe with a big gorgeous smile my daughter still has the urge to hug her! So beautiful!

An Amazing Book about Self-Acceptance, Developing Positive Self-Esteem, and Respecting Diversity!
Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2019Verified Purchase
Thank you so much for this book. I love it! This book is a great for teaching children self-acceptance, developing positive self-esteem, and respecting diversity. I am a kindergarten teacher and I can't wait to share this book with my class. I love the picture of Lupita Nyong'o on the back cover. It allows children of color, especially with darker skin tones, to see that there are great authors that look just like them. Again, thank you for making a difference in the lives of children.

I love the book and the message behind it. I got teased for being darker and I wish I had a book like this when I was younger. I am raising two little black girls and I am looking forward to reading this to them.
Minus one star because although the cover is extremely beautiful, it easily tore. The cover rubbed up against something and the bottom of it tore already. I wasn’t tough or anything. The cover is not glued on or anything. It can be removed from the book which I don’t like.
Other than that it’s a great book.

This story is beautifully told and illustrated, and a pleasing first book from Lupita Nyong'o. This is a must read to any child that has doubted themselves or their worth because of how they looked, especially those with darker complexions.
Sisters Day and Night once friends become separated, after Dark hears hurtful words. But when the days become too long, Dark is needed to create balance, and the people realize her beauty and importance. Night and Day find a unique way to share with each other during their respective hours.
Part fantasy, part adventure, this is a beautiful book about self discovery.

I really really wanted to love the story.... I don’t and I’m probably the only one in the whole world. Positives: The pictures are beautiful.
I bought the book for my daughter. I was so exited about the book I did not even read it on my own before hand. So I started to read the story to her and I had to stop. I felt that the book could create issue where there are non. My daughter is not very dark but she is the only black child at her nursery and inevitably we shall tackle colour and race. Sulwe’s story is sad but i would feel that it would be geared to older / pre teen to adults.....

An excellent book! It made me cry because as a dark skinned girl I was made to feel bad about my complexion and I grew up feeling ugly. This book has captured my struggle and my triumph in finally seeing the beauty in my dark skin. Thank you Lupita for this book. It’s a book that I will cherish forever.

Just arrived and it was worth the wait. Exquisitely drawn and beautifully written. It's heart felt and a perfect gift for any child but especially those who can truly relate to the story. There's a lack of media and toys for children of colour but this book will hopefully see that change.

Pre-ordered as soon as it was available to buy, the premise and story behind why Lupita decide to make this book was enough for me to go out and buy a copy through Amazon. It really is a wonderful story that's so many kids growing up today can relate to and also grown ups/adults who've passed through a similar phase as a child. The illustrations compliment the story creating a wonderful balance between narrative and artwork bringing the story alive in a beautiful way! I thoroughly enjoyed the books message and really commend Lupita on her first ever book! Definitely worth buying.
