About the Author
M.Lee Buompensiero is a third generation San Diegan and supports the writing arts through her work as member of the Board of Directors of the San Diego Writers/Editors Guild. She is the managing editor of the annual anthology, The Guilded Pen, a collection of short stories, essays and poetry by its members. In 2016, Buompensiero established Grey Castle Publishing to promote local authors.
Sumerland was inspired by a truestory, childhood events, and the oral history handed down from Buompensiero'sgrandmother. "Grandmother's past was shrouded in secrets and shadows,"Buompensiero says. "Her estrangement from her husband resulted in a family split that lasted for generations. Our reunion, 90 years later, became the catalyst for Sumerland.
"I owe my storytelling passion to Grandmother Clara who raised me. Her voice fueled my imagination and is why I write today. Her tall tales aboutgrowing up in the back woods of Canada were dark and pulsed with characters who were mired in misdeeds and tragedy."
"Sumerland," Buompensiero says, "is first and foremost, a family fable. It is an homage to our ancestors, a declaration of hope that future generations may learn from the mistakes of the past--and not repeat them. Everything we are today has its beginnings in the lives of those who came before us."
Sumerland is very definitely a ghoststory. "The house in the story exists," Buomensiero says."We have a history. In the book's 'Author's Notes,' I tell of many instances of paranormal activity that I experienced while living there.Recently, while researching for this novel, I drove by the old place. It'sstill there, at the top of hill, fenced off and, undoubtedly, still haunted."
Buompensiero also writes under the pen name "Loren Zahn" and is the author of the Theo HunterMystery Series: Dirty Little Murders and Deadly Little Secrets. Please visit theohuntermysteries.com to learn more.

After her parents die suddenly, Kate learns she has inherited a grand house from her mother, a house neither she nor her father knew anything about. The need to make decisions about the house, including whether to keep or sell it, keeps her in San Diego, away from her San Francisco home, longer than she expected. So long, in fact, that she begins to notice ghostly visions in the house that both repel and intrigue her, especially after she discovers a scribbled inscription in the sidewalk, under a bush, with initials, a date, and the misspelled name, Sumerland. Long enough also to meet Jack, whose presence further complicates her decisions.
Kate’s curiosity about both what led to her mother’s acquisition of the house that had for most of the previous 30 years had been a rehabilitation hospital for veterans and the ghostly images that interrupt her sleep lead her to discover family secrets that bring her together with family members she didn’t know she had at the same time as answering questions from her childhood that she never dared ask.
This excellent book incorporates history, humor, trivia, romance, friendship, curiosity and persistence in just the right proportions. Not too many tomatoes and just the right amount of cucumbers. All the characters are believable and feel like whole, real people.
Our protagonist struggles with her own past history as she moves forward to solve an old family secret. But she gets much more than an unraveling of an old mystery. She faces many enigmatic obstacles along the way and she just might find her true self as well in her personal mystical journey.
Take a seat at the table, grab a fork and a napkin and dig in. Dessert included.
