"These are beautiful, durable books. If you are considering studying the works of the Angelic Doctor, St. Thomas Aquinas, and dabbling in the rich tradition of the Scholastics, you need to order this set. These are durably bound and printed on high quality paper. When you are not reading them, they will look great on your shelf, and when you begin to spend hours studying them, you will appreciate the layout, font, etc. Ideal for studying! Having the original Latin down the left side of the page provides you with comfort that the translation is orthodox and, if you ever wonder if there is a language issue, you can just switch over to the Latin side and translate for yourself. You are going to spend a decent sum of money no matter what set of the Summa you order, so make the best investment you can and order this set." - Amazon Review
About the Author
An intellectual giant of the 13th century, Thomas Aquinas is best known for the clarity of thought in his philosophical and theological writings. His primary occupation at the University of Paris was as a theologian and a commentator on Sacred Scripture, and his philosophical work was always at the service of his Scriptural meditations. The writings of Thomas Aquinas remain widely influential to this day. “In his thinking, the demands of reason and the power of faith found the most elevated synthesis ever attained by human thought.” (John Paul II, Fides et Ratio)

As many philosophy and theology students know, finding a print edition of the Summa Theologiae is quite difficult and finding one with both the Leonine edition and the Eastern province Dominican translation is even harder (these are probably the best versions out there).
The books themselves are well-bound and very high quality. The Latin and English is side by side, and all fully typed - this is not a photocopy of another edition. The text is therefore very easy to read, and if you are scanning through the English it is quite easy to switch over to the Latin to consult the original text.
I am looking forward the the Aquinas Institute's other publications, especially the Aristotelian commentaries.
"The books are Smyth sewn (in signatures), with imitation leather and gold foil stamping, 80lb end sheets, and the books are individually shrink wrapped for shipping with the ISBN sticker on the wrapping. They are offset printed on natural 40 lb paper after being professionally typeset with Adobe InDesign."
I had this heavy set of books shipped overseas, and each volume arrived in perfect condition due to packing method. You will not regret purchasing this fine edition of the Summa.
Because of that, I will not be reviewing what he has written. If that is what you were looking for, all I can say is that the information is worth the time it takes to read and understand it. His work is simply stellar.
The remainder of this review will focus solely on the books qua books, that is, not on the information they present.
I received the complete set of St. Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologiae approximately three days after making the order. In the words of the deliveryman who fulfilled the order, they are collectively "very heavy." I would estimate the package to be somewhere around 30 pounds.
The pages are high quality and relatively thick, which is very useful for those of us who refer to the set often. The text itself is not a mere scan or photocopy of previous printings but has been entirely re-typeset in an easy-to-read font and at a great size.
This set comes in eight volumes. At the beginning of each volume is a convenient table of contents. The binding is very durable, and I can personally attest to this after all the use I have put the volumes through. The pages stay open from the moment you first open the volumes. The appearance of the binding is very classical and elegant and will compliment almost every bookshelf. You may note that each volume is numbered 13 through 20. This is because The Aquinas Institute for the Study of Sacred Doctrine, who prints this set, also prints many other works of St. Aquinas, and the numbering system is designed to work with the complete works of St. Aquinas.
The Institute offers an edited and revised version of a reliable and traditional translation of the Latin text. The English is understandable and beautiful. I have noticed only one or two errors so far in my use so far, and these errors did not detract from the sum and substance of the work or any section of it. Parallel to the English text is the Latin text, which is extremely useful for any serious theologian; it allows you to go directly to the source should any confusion arise from the English. You would, of course, have to have a working knowledge of Latin to fully appreciate it.
In conclusion, it is not common that you will find a printed or even on-line version of the Summa that is this great and of such excellent quality, and I absolutely and with no hesitation recommend anyone who is considering this purchase it. If you are also considering any other works of St. Aquinas, the Institute is who you will want to get it from.
