- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2017This book is many things, but boring is not one of them. I am always a bit amused when nonfiction books are labeled as such. I rather see this book as thought provoking, particularly in light of current political events here in the USA. I am reminded that while there are significant differences in politics during 2017 and 1381, there most certainly are a great deal of notable similarities between these time frames. By reading about the past, there are many lessons to be learned for the future. One of the most important things that I have come to realize, is that the common person should never be underestimated, which is something that hopefully our leaders will come to recognize as well.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2013In this his first book from Dan Jones sets himself squarely as a first rate story teller. Anyone with a taste for history should get this this item. He writes very much in the style of the late David Howarth (from my point of view one of the best historical writers of this age). You might wish to buy "The Plantagenets" as well. So what is the bottom line - buy both books, curl up and be wonderfully surrounded in British history.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2017What an education! The exact details of the uprising- beginning with the heavy taxing and the animosity toward John of Gaunt to utter reckless chaos and indescribable violence. Beautifully written. Even some tongue-in-cheek moments along with a brilliant author. I couldn't put down for long.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2013The clearest and most well written account of this "flash rising of the humblest" I have read. Jones gives the reader a good picture of June, 1381 and their momentous events. Wat Tyler comes through clearly as an inspiring leader, but one in over his head and one who, after the uprising has made great inroads seems to lose his way during the confrontation with Richard II pushing not just for the end of serfdom but of lordship as well. Initially, the total paralyzed nature of the government is in evidence as the mobs rampaged through London, capturing the Tower and sacking the Savoy, the largest palace complex in England at the time, killing many, including close consolers of the king. From the point of view of the political center, the hero is William of Walworth, the mayor of London, who stabs and wounds Wat, goes to London to get reserves and then comes back to behead him (for which he is knighted by Richard II). Over 1500 were killed in the counter-terror of the government whose retribution by armed knights was considerable. The author makes it obvious that even highly motivated peasants and artisans could not stand against the heavy horse style of warfare once that got ignited.

Shipping and service was good.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2013I had previously read "Plantagenets" by Dan Jones and went looking for other books by him. It tells the story of this uprising that was introduced in "Plantagenets", but of course it is much more in depth. Very good.
If you enjoy this, try "1066". Different author but very good too.
Excellent.

Dan Jones is a master of making the Middle Ages relatable, engaging and understandable to a wider audience and this book is no exception. The telling and narrative of the Peastants Revolt is masterfully discussed and explained and I would highly recommend this book as the go to for anyone who wants to know more.

Turbo of DursleyReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 2, 20244.0 out of 5 stars Very readable narrative detailing events which we've all heard about but know little about
History at school mentions that there was a peasants' revolt around 1380 and that it was something about poll tax. This book describes a much more varied combination of factors that drove parts of the population to rebel against the established order. Although the revolt was regional in scope, participation was often enforced as the rebel factions surged through villages towards the Capital. One surprise was that many of the rebels were far from "peasants", another was the astonishing level of violence involved. Beheadings were common on both sides as was the total destruction of major estates. The fact that the protestors with a cause were joined by hooligans and opportunistic looters suggested a link to modern day breakdowns of law and order. This is a fascinating and well written book.
