Kyle Ranz continues his quest for growth and development and to set things right in the universe. Kyle seems to always do what is right even when it cost him. Every time Kyle takes one step forward, a calamity happens that pushes him back. However, he will not allow conventional wisdom to interfere with what he is try to accomplish.
PROs: I like the way the Dawn is expanding the LitRPG genre into the space environment. The challenges of weapons and armor stats for Mechs and Ships (not to mention people) must be extremely challenging.
CONs: There are so many stats to keep up with. Thankfully, Dawn is indicating the changes in BOLD so that the reader can quickly see the changes.
I recommend this book to boys and girls over the age of 14.
Profanity: Minimal uses of the F word
Alcohol/tobacco: none that I recall
Sexual content: Minimal description, several encounters
****** SPOILER ALERT ****************
One of the scenes that I enjoyed most, was when Kyle is going to meet Motaki to purchase the two MECHs. I had realized that Kyle hadn’t been double crossed, all of his people were extremely loyal. When the double cross occurs, I had anticipated it. Not because it was predictable, but because it made perfect sense in what happened next in the story.
As with many 4 book story ARC's far too often I find that the 3rd book is only a bridge, using lots of words just to get you to the other side... But, not so with this book! Summer Friction is full of surprises, action and big reveals. We lose some friends, and it hurts, we also gain some of the most unlikely allies too! And still Kyle (the main character) doesn't lose sight of the goal, making Summer Friction my favorite in the series... so far! Thank you, Dawn Chapman!
Ya'll need to get this series and get caught up quick! The final book was recently released soooooooo you'll be able to charge all the way through to the end!
HOWEVER! Kyle and his friends are still a lot of fun, and when the action happens, the book is hard to put down. I am sad about some of the developments that occur in this, the third book, and just the fact that I am emotionally involved is already the mark of a great story. I love this space epic, and I look forward to seeing the 4th book!
Kyle and friends are back, and it is one hectic universe out there! Dogged by a notorious mercenary coalition bent on revenge and cashing in on an outrageous bounty, will our band of intrepid heroes be able to make it across space in time to help his friends? What could possibly go wrong?
Neil knocks the narration out of the park in this one!
If you liked the story so far, you won't be disappointed by this continuation!
I enjoyed the ride, and can't wait for the next book to come out!
However, that aside I am still quite enjoying this series and can't wait to read the next book.
While I've been enjoying the series so far, smaller issues have become increasingly apparent. The characters stat sheets are taking up more and more room and mean nothing. Characters frequently gain or lose stats for random reasons, as best as I can tell done purely for plot reasons. One minute the MC is rewarded for pushing himself, the next he is being horribly punished for the exact same behavior.
As more of the world and characters are introduced, it becomes more of a mess to read. Doesnt clearly switch perspective and internal conversations frequently blend with outside in confusing ways.
