Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up—This anthology of love stories is the perfect summer read—it's fast, fun, and will leave readers smiling. The nine entries present characters that identify in a variety of ways. Stand-out stories include "Surface Tension" by Ella J. Ash. Logan is part of the swim staff at a summer arts camp and never imagines he could find love there—or while a teenager at all. Meeting outgoing Dave changes his mind. In "What the Heart Wants," by Naomi Tajedler, Noam discovers her attraction to an art class model, Amber, and isn't sure if that makes her a lesbian, bisexual, or just Amber-sexual. Meanwhile, her best friend begins dating an asexual boy. Other stories feature a revelation at a gay pride parade, a romance set at the beginning of World War II, a traveling fire-eater, a letter to a best friend, a transgender boy finding love on the Cape, an unexpected crush, and a broken-hearted girl seeking solace but instead finding just the company she needs. All of the stories have happy endings and most feature extremely supportive and loving families. In many cases, the main characters come out to someone at some point, but that's not the focus of the stories. These are the first published stories for most of the authors in this collection, and it often shows. VERDICT The writing is somewhat unpolished, but the focus on LGBTQ teens finding love, hope, and happiness makes this a solid addition to all collections.—Amanda MacGregor, formerly at Apollo High School Library, St. Cloud, MN

Summer Love was the perfect book to fulfill my craving for some nice, fluffy LGBTQ young adult romance. I was glad to have some stories with LGBTQ protagonists that didn't involve them being bullied or hated for their LGBTQ identity. It was also nice to be able to support a book with so many new authors who will hopefully write more LGBTQ young adult stories in the future. My one complaint is that six of the stories were about boys and only three were about girls, and I wish there had been a least one more story with a female protagonist. But still, I hope they publish a collection of short stories for the other three seasons!

A really lovely collection of stories. Beautiful stories of the beginnings of young love. In nearly every story, I would have been more than happy to read a full novel length book of their stories. I think Beautiful Monsters was my favorite. But, all lovely stories. A really perfect summer read.

This is a wonderful collection of stories about first summertime romances. The stories are about young adult characters, but they will resonate with anyone who has ever enjoyed or dreamed of a summer romance. Bonfires, beaches and summer jobs form the backdrop to stories about first glances, first kisses and first touches.

Unlike many anthologies, the content here is cohesive and the writing is consistently excellent. I was surprised by the stories I was most drawn to. I loved Ella J. Ash’s story, Surface Tension, about a summer camp romance. Naomi Tajedler’s story, What the Heart Wants, about a young girl’s sexual awakening in art class, is a beautiful, emotionally honest piece. I also loved Rachel Blackburn’s On the Shore, a sweetly exuberant story of a beach romance. I found The Most Handsome by SJ Martin, the story of a transexual boy’s first romance, to be compelling and beguiling.

This is such a great collection. I think it will make young LGBTQ readers feel hopeful while it makes the rest of us nostalgic. A wonderful summer read.

I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

I reached for "Summer Love" in a cold, rainy autumn week when I didn't have much free time to immerse myself in any long form. Summery short stories sounded perfect. And they did provide a perfect escape - in fact, many delicious little escapes filled with the sun and the feel of slow summer days, and the memory of first loves.

There are very different stories in this anthology, and I have a few favorites - "Beautiful Monsters", "What the Heart Wants" and "On the Shore", in particular - but each and every one of them felt special; every one left a mark on my heart and a beautiful line or two in my quotes notebook. I'm so impressed with these authors' ability to contain the elusive summer moments in such lovely little gems of stories. I'm looking forward to anything more each of them writes, and I will definitely be coming back to this summer anthology.

Highly recommended.
