Bridget McKenna reviewed The Summer Man
A Little Bit of Summer Chill May 12, 2013
I haven't done much since S.D. Perry's The Summer Man arrived on my Kindle except read it. I'm an exceedingly picky reader, and in my opinion Ms. Perry doesn't put a foot wrong here from beginning to end. Her prose is superb, her plotting sure, and she handles a varied and utterly believable cast of characters deftly and skillfully while telling a gripping story that's well worth your time, money, and attention. I really hope I don't have long to wait for her next book.

From the Author

I love horror, and I love the unexpected, and I lived in a town very much like Port Isley for a year, when I was about 12. I'm very proud of this book, and I hope that readers enjoy it.

This book started out exciting and tense and scary. It was a great, fun read. Then I became more and more aware that while I was getting closer and closer to the end, nothing much was happening in the plot. And then it just ended, with maybe 2-3 pages to 'explain' what had been happening the whole time. There's absolutely no pay-off or satisfaction to be had from finishing this book. Don't buy.

Port Isley, Washington is experiencing its usual influx of summer people, backbone of the local economy. The town picnic, the open poetry night, and the carnival are the anticipated high points of tourist-town excitement for the season. But summer has barely begun when a double murder and suicide rock the complacency of townspeople and visitors alike, and change Amanda Young's life forever--because she saw it all happen in a vision. And no-one, not even Amanda, with her growing knowledge of future events, suspects that this is only the beginning.

OK folks. Just finished The Summer Man by S.D. Perry, and I must admit that I honestly HATED having to (and at times, didn't/simply couldn't) put this one down to tend to other responsibilities... At first the plot felt just a tad slow yet somehow simultaneously busy, BUT with every page turned I came to see that this talented author was carefully crafting a very strong and scary story entwined with multiple truly fascinating character studies. I especially appreciated the dialogue that felt so very authentic, along with a close look at some supremely flawed yet captivating characters. Loved that this novel brilliantly combined all my favorite genres into one very masterfully told story. Deep and dark, yet delicious. :) For a debut novel, wow/holy crap - gimme more! Though I will never enjoy seafood bisque again thanks to S.D. Perry, LOVED The Summer Man!

Definitely hard to put down. The characters come to life here, and you can't wait to see what's going to happen. A great read from beginning to end, and I can't wait to see what this author does next!

Book started off interesting, then almost immediately when down hill. I always finish a book but I actually had to stop after 2 weeks and take a break from it. When I came back to it, I finished. The ending is ok but doesn't explain much. The shoot out, the missing children, nothing is explained. I would not recommend this book to anyone. Sorry for the bad review but this one was hard to read.

Starts out with an interesting beginning, main character is well developed, it keeps you pretty interested and has some creep factor going on but did not live up to it's promise at the end.

If I may, I want to just start out by saying that I have always been fond of Perry's works. Her previous tie-in novels and novelizations of video games or movies have always been great, and I think it's ridiculous that it took her this long to write an original novel. It was about time. I don't think she gets enough credit for saving the story of the first original Resident evil game from its cheesy dialogue and voice acting/acting by writing a novel for them, or for making the screenplay of Virus palatable. All her books are blueprints for how to write good sci-fi.

Anyway, on with this new book of hers, I thought the story was very entertaining, certainly did not want to put the book down. I read it in between two days worth of busy work and was enjoying it (and that mention or reference on Carl Jung and his concepts of archetypes was great for me!). One thing that Perry does very well in all her novels, this one no exception, is that she's able to have a slew of characters in one story, but still manage to give you as much background or emotion as she can fit to each individual, which helps to give you empathy or other emotions once some thing (good or bad) happens to that character. Love them or hate them, these characters felt real. I especially felt this way about the main character Amanda and her somewhat gradual growth from a pot-smoking vagabond sex freak girl to a more (slightly more) responsible and quick-under-pressure woman. You feel the characters' mood shifts, ups, lows, and so on, and I liked that.

The story did move along slow in the beginning but because of so many characters. Some time had to be spent molding these individuals, otherwise you wouldn't have given a care about them, and so I had no problem in the speed of the novel there quite frankly.

I chose this book because I was going on vacation and wanted a summer read. I read the reviews and someone posted that it was a good summer book. It was not. It went on forever and had no point. It was a total waste of my time.
