“Because being disabled makes you Other, and that erases you, because nobody in the world wanted to be Other.” - Summer Johnson

I’m the type of reader that if I know my heart is going to ache while reading a book, I may just go to the end of the book so I can deal with the angst while reading. I was forewarned to not do that with The Summer Remains and I’m grateful I didn’t. It would have completely ruined the journey of Summer and Cooper.

Being the parent of a disabled child, I completely understand the scrutiny, isolation and cynicism that Summer felt. No one wants to be Other. Everyone wants to be accepted, however, our society shamefully isn’t programmed that way for anyone who doesn’t fit the current mold. And Summer is Other. At least until she meets Cooper Nichols.

Let me say this about Cooper….the world would be a much better place if there was a bit of Cooper in all of us. I don’t want to say more about him because you need to meet him on your own. He’s that incredible.

Seth King basically ripped out my heart, tore it up a bit and then gracefully, passionately and gently put it back in. This is a modern day love story complete with social media and its highs and lows, as well as the real life struggles of two “differently damaged” people coming together to create a powerful message.

The eloquence of Seth King’s writing just swallowed me whole. I smelled the sea. Felt the sand in my toes. The hospital disinfectant. Felt the pain as if I was a part of the scene. Yes, it’s just that fantastic.

If there is one book you must read this year, it’s The Summer Remains. It will capture your heart and soul, hold onto both, and not let go.

It's so hard to describe The Summer Remains because honestly most words just don't do it justice. You can literally feel how Seth poured his heart and soul into this book.
I swear Summer and Cooper will steal your heart from the beginning. The Summer Remains has ruined any other books for me. It is so different from any romance novel I've ever read. It's not the same "boy with troubled past has girl save him and they live happily ever after". It's pure breathtakingly beautiful love in the most amazing and tragic way.
Summer is strong and funny. Cooper is just I don't even know, perfect?
This book shows us how love can take over and ruin people in the best possible way. Please, please one click this book. It's truely life changing, it will honestly have you walking away looking at life in a completely different way.
There's nothing more I can say, you need to read this book for yourself and experience every single second for yourself.
Seth is so talented, everything he writes is amazingly written. But The Summer Remains has stolen a piece of my heart like absolutely no other book has. It will honestly stay with me forever.

When I began this book, I immediately compared it to The Fault in Our Stars. I don't know why. Perhaps because TFiOS changed me and I had a feeling this book would, too.

I was wrong.

It didn't change me. It absolutely ruined me. This isn't the kind of book you read and then decide to change the way you live your life. This is the kind of book that changes you from the inside out without your consent.

I laughed, I swooned, I screamed, and I cried. Well, I sobbed, honestly.

This book is magnificent. It was expertly crafted, hooking me from the very first page. Every page from the first to the last had my undivided attention. And the characters...well, Summer and Cooper will stay with me forever.

I know I'm supposed to say I'm going to recommend this book to everyone I know, but I'm not sure I can. I am torn between screaming my love for this book from the rooftops and never telling another living soul about it because it is fantastic and honest and raw and MINE. I can't imagine sharing it with anyone.

Don't read this book. More specifically, don't read it unless you are prepared to give up reading forever, because The Summer Remains will DESTROY you for all future books.

Life isn’t fair, yet it is beautiful. We are each born with our own set of flaws, some are on the outside and some are on the inside. Some people can see these flaws and shun us no matter how big the mask is that we try to hide them with. But every once in a while, someone comes along and removes our mask and loves us for just who we are. Loves us for our spirit. Loves us for our determination. Loves us without fault or without reservation. Loves us unconditionally. We can only hope that at some point in our life we find someone to love us this way. In Seth King’s The Summer Remains, all Summer Johnson can hope for, can wish for, can dream for is a love like this…and little does she know it will come in the form of a beautiful guy named Cooper Nichols.

As soon as you begin The Summer Remains, you know you are about to experience something special. For it is in these first few pages Summer’s future is mapped out. She is brave, she is forthright in her wants and she is strength personified. As she sets out on a summer that might be her last, we get to know this cynical girl and her personality just shines. I love how Mr. King wrote her flaws, they were visible…you could picture them. You think as you read this story how much you would love to be friends with her, but honestly we might have reacted to her like everybody else did. With pity, with awkwardness, with remorse. Looking through Summer’s eyes at the world in a time of social media and just how much it can really make someone feel lonely or insignificant was very eye opening. There were many times, I stopped and reflected on my own Facebook posts, my own braggart moments, my own triumphs and thought hmmm. We live in a world of oneupedness and I kind of love that Mr. King brought me down a peg.
