I’m the type of reader that if I know my heart is going to ache while reading a book, I may just go to the end of the book so I can deal with the angst while reading. I was forewarned to not do that with The Summer Remains and I’m grateful I didn’t. It would have completely ruined the journey of Summer and Cooper.
Being the parent of a disabled child, I completely understand the scrutiny, isolation and cynicism that Summer felt. No one wants to be Other. Everyone wants to be accepted, however, our society shamefully isn’t programmed that way for anyone who doesn’t fit the current mold. And Summer is Other. At least until she meets Cooper Nichols.
Let me say this about Cooper….the world would be a much better place if there was a bit of Cooper in all of us. I don’t want to say more about him because you need to meet him on your own. He’s that incredible.
Seth King basically ripped out my heart, tore it up a bit and then gracefully, passionately and gently put it back in. This is a modern day love story complete with social media and its highs and lows, as well as the real life struggles of two “differently damaged” people coming together to create a powerful message.
The eloquence of Seth King’s writing just swallowed me whole. I smelled the sea. Felt the sand in my toes. The hospital disinfectant. Felt the pain as if I was a part of the scene. Yes, it’s just that fantastic.
If there is one book you must read this year, it’s The Summer Remains. It will capture your heart and soul, hold onto both, and not let go.
I swear Summer and Cooper will steal your heart from the beginning. The Summer Remains has ruined any other books for me. It is so different from any romance novel I've ever read. It's not the same "boy with troubled past has girl save him and they live happily ever after". It's pure breathtakingly beautiful love in the most amazing and tragic way.
Summer is strong and funny. Cooper is just I don't even know, perfect?
This book shows us how love can take over and ruin people in the best possible way. Please, please one click this book. It's truely life changing, it will honestly have you walking away looking at life in a completely different way.
There's nothing more I can say, you need to read this book for yourself and experience every single second for yourself.
Seth is so talented, everything he writes is amazingly written. But The Summer Remains has stolen a piece of my heart like absolutely no other book has. It will honestly stay with me forever.
Part 2, of the book titled, Cooper Nichols just about killed me. It was extremely hard to read through all the tears running down my face. All I wanted to do, was jump into the book, grab Cooper and hold him forever.
These two characters, Summer and Cooper, in my eyes, saved each other and fell so deeply in love it was amazing to read.
Seth's writing was smart, witty and filled with miles of emotions. One of my favorite things about the book was all the song lyrics and the individual quotes from the lyrics throughout the book.
I highly recommend this book.
I leave you with one last thought and a quote from Cooper:
"Life is brief but love is long. Somewhere between anger and love is an ocean of eternal tranquility. It is there that I will see you again."
Thank you Cooper and Thank YOU, Seth.
So the irony to this day is not only getting to read a beautiful story, that everyone in the world should read, The Summer Remains but I'm mixing it into my day of seeing the most anticipated movie ever of erotica and romance, Fifty Shades, funny right?
As I start this review I can't seem to get it out of my head how someone can write such a story, and I do not say this in a negative aspect, but this story is not just a story on two characters falling in love, but it's also about the well being of people, the outlook on life and how very few people truly see life and this world for what it is. The Summer a Remains is not just a heart wrenching novel on love, it's the most beautiful one I have ever read. From book one I have loved Seth Kings writing but I have a completely new respect and understanding for him.
So now to focus on the actual story itself, The Summer Remains is a story on romance, and growing (in whatever aspect you want to take it).
The main character Summer is such a stubborn character, but how can she not with the life she has been dealt. Everything that people take for granted Summer misses out on it, or just lets it go. But knowing what she is about to be faced with outs an entire new outlook on how she wants to live her life and what she really wants to do with it. It's something that one cannot understand or not agree with, because it is that personal and relatable no matter what anyone says. I truly love this girl, she is someone I already idolize and want to look up to, someone I would love to meet in real life and someone I want to confide in whether it's for yelling and bitching or sharing my wishes and secrets with.
Then there is Cooper, how I would love to have a man like Cooper in my life, yes he partially had that depressing writer aspect but I find it very thrilling and unforgettable. He has a very natural ability at life no matter what he says or how he sees it. There is no possibility of not falling for someone like Cooper, he had a beautiful and deep soul that would feel like an honor just to be able to touch it.
I will end this review saying again that this is not just a book, but a story that every person needs to read. It will affect you in more way than one. And everyday I will remember her story as well as live by these words.
"Life makes people cry. The truth makes people cry. Reality makes people cry. It happens."
