This is different from anything I've read before. Summer's Journey is unique look at one woman's journey to discover freedom in her sexuality. It is written in a memoir/biography style. Reading Summer's Journey made me feel as if I was right there with her experiencing every emotion. I think it will be fun to see what happens next. Look for volume 3 coming SOON!
"Volume One - Losing Control" is the introduction to the "Summer's Journey" series. It is where we meet the main characters and get an insight into the story that is to unfold. Summer has just recently come out of a fairly lacklustre marriage and instead of crying in her Wheaties she decides to move on with her life. She hits the online hook-up sites looking for some action. At first, this doesn't go too well. Her inbox quickly overflows with replies to her ad from, well, lets just say from less than articulate men. Now Summer wasn't looking for Mr Right, she wanted Mr Right Now, but he should at least be able to maintain a conversation. Then along comes Mark.
Summer and Mark exchange a few emails and eventually agree to meet. At their first meeting Summer learns that Mark is in a similar situation to her own. He is recently divorced as well. There is definitely a spark between them, but when Summer comes right out and tells Mark that she'd like to take him upstairs to have her wicked way with him, he turns her down! Mark tells her that he wants more than a one night quick romp. Gulp! Poor Summer isn't looking for any commitments here, she just wants to get laid. Then Mark drops the real bomb shell. When they do get to the horizontal pleasure zone he wants control. Total and complete control. Double GULP! But before Summer has time for that to fully sink in Mark gets up and leaves. Summer is left sitting there by herself wondering what the hell just happened.
That is nowhere near the whole story of Volume One, but it is all I'm going to give up in this review. The rest is even better than what I've described here. You are going to love it, and I guarantee that when you get to the end the first thing you'll want to do is read the next installment.
Summer Daniels is an author to watch out for and "Summer's Journey: Volume One - Losing Control" deserves every single one of the five stars I gave it.
Great read, and though it's obviously the start of a series, Summer has successfully engineered it to stand on its own - well done! I appreciate not only the pacing and tone, but also how (and where) she placed the hook. The facts that the writing is clean and crisp (with well placed tension and humor to boot) and that I wasn't caught by an errant piece of grammar detritus causing me to grind to a screeching halt are met with much gratitude by my inner editrix.
Beyond the mechanics (because only an editor cares about those anyway): the story itself is intriguing and captivating. Outside of a Puritannical Church Lady, I can't fathom how anyone wouldn't be at least curious to follow the rest of the journey. The more adventuresome of readers will, I think, follow with gleeful (if not antsy) anticipation - and you may certainly count me as one of the latter.
The voice was intriguing but I don't know what I would want to read on. The intellectual domination and submission was a bit slow for me. I found it hard to believe that someone would do what this supposedly true story purports. Well, and live to tell the tale, I guess.
It was erotic but it left me feeling unfulfilled. I guess I'm just a girl who needs more than 23 pages? I'm sure others will enjoy this teaser, but do note that you don't get a full story. It's more like you got the first chapter. I'm sure if you are a good girl/boy, she will give you the next one. I just don't think I'll be bothered to buy it.
Maybe when the whole thing is done, but for now, I'd rather not be part of what feels like a weekly writers' group. I hate having to wait for more pages.
I decided to give it a test run and I am not one bit disappointed. Some of the writing is a tad bit loose, but the story is very well told and builds tension. By the last chapter, I was wondering just what the protagonist was going to wind up doing. I had to laugh at certain parts - I mean, an IT guy building a website and providing his medical information to impress a woman he wants to lure into bed with him? It seems absurd. But in this case, it had me giggling and rooting for the style sheets.
Good plot. Interesting characters. And well executed.
