Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Woven together with lifestyle and entertaining tips, this cookbook by Slatkin, a Culinary Institute of America–trained chef, was inspired by her family's hotel, Shutters on the Beach, a 200-room beachfront luxury resort in Santa Monica, Calif. The recipes are appealing enough and easy to follow, but aren't particularly inspiring, beach-worthy or portable, with the notable exception of Peanut-Butterscotch Crunch Bars and Iced Nougat with Honey and Figs. By dividing the recipes into different types of weather—Sunny Days, Cloudy Days, Balmy Nights, Stormy Nights, Misty Mornings—the author seems to be trying to squeeze the four seasons into a temperate climate in an attempt to broaden the book's demographic reach. But the distinctions seem somewhat arbitrary: why is a lemon tart for a cloudy not sunny day? Cucumber Gazpacho might be nice for a hot day at the shore, but a Grilled Chicken Club Sandwich with bacon and mayonnaise probably wouldn't be a good idea in the heat. The lifestyle tips, while sometimes obvious, are more on target. Pool Perfect includes suggestions for how to make your home pool seem like one at a fancy resort with thoughtful amenities such as scented towels and undiluted iced drinks, while Six Uses for a Bucket of Sand offers creative suggestions for bringing the beach indoors when the weather outside is uncooperative. Crazy delicious and easy to use recipes. My new staple is the sweet corn chowder. The book is also loaded with great cooking tips and is so beautiful to look at, I bought a dozen copies to give out as hostess gifts this summer! The summertime vibe is now very much alive in my home(and it isn't even summer yet!).

WOW! What a fresh, accessible cookbook. It's my new favorite on the bookshelf, right next to the Barefoot Contessa series. I was hungry for easy, hip recipes I could use in cooking for my family and having friends over, and this book really delivered just what I was looking for.

As a food journalist, recipe developer, and recipe tester I've done more than my share of cooking from cookbooks and often find that the recipes don't inspire me or are too complicated to embark on for everyday meals.

What I absolutely love about this cookbook is that the recipes are not only easy, but they also happen to be extraordinarily good. Again and again I am delighted with how fantastic the food tastes, and how approachable the ingredients and instructions are.

I truly cannot say enough good things about this book.

This is great recipe book. There are many great ideas and it's easy to find something to inspire you. I have tried half a dozen of the recipes and two in particular (the chocolate pie and the roasted veg) have become family favourites. Indeed the chocolate pie (and pie crust) recipe is worth the cost of the book on its own.

So why only four stars? Anyone who prints a recipe for lemon tart with gelatin to make it set, automatically loses a star - I am sure that this is not how it's cooked in Shutters! Also some of the dressings have an odd balance between oil and vinegar that will not be to many people's taste. Finally, there are a couple of stir-fried recipes which suggest cooking the food for too long.

If you have already bought this book, then I would suggest that you check Bill Granger's recipe books which are very similar in terms of inspiration and style.

You're friends will taut you as a gourmet chef when you present any one of these recipes! EVERYTHING is delicious and easy to do... I'm not a professional chef, ask anyone, I just enjoy cooking and this book has a wonderful collection of tasty dishes. I especially enjoyed the part where she discusses the items you should always have in your pantry, like grapseed oil. Who knew? Now I use grapeseed oil for all kinds of things in addition to the recipes in this book. I love this book so much I'm going to quickly cook my way through it. I even bought it for my friend b/c she loved everything in it so much too. Lemon ricotta pancakes anyone?

I love Shutters and every time I am in Santa Monica I try and go their for lunch. The food always tastes fresh, straight-forward, healthy and delicious!
I was thrilled that they now have a cookbook. The recipes are well written, simple to follow and use ingredients that are easy to get. The pictures are very enticing as well. I just made the strawberry-rhubarb cobbler and my whole family loved it. The crust is just a little lighter than I normally make and this will now become our classic cobbler recipe. If I can't be at Shutters in Santa Monica then I am happy to have the next best thing - THE SUMMERTIME ANYTIME COOKBOOK! -
