Grim Reaper Charley Davidson is back in the final installment of Darynda Jones’ New York Times bestselling paranormal series--Summoned to Thirteenth Grave.
Charley Davidson, Grim Reaper extraordinaire, is pissed. She’s been kicked off the earthly plane for eternity –which is exactly the amount of time it takes to make a person stark, raving mad. But someone’s looking out for her, and she’s allowed to return after a mere hundred years in exile. Is it too much to hope for that not much has changed? Apparently it is. Bummer.
She’s missed her daughter. She’s missed Reyes. She’s missed Cookie and Garrett and Uncle Bob. But now that she’s back on earth, it’s time to put to rest burning questions that need answers. What happened to her mother? How did she really die? Who killed her? And are cupcakes or coffee the best medicine for a broken heart? It all comes to a head in an epic showdown between good and evil in this final smart and hilarious novel.

In this installment, Charley finally makes her way back to the mortal world after being sent to a hell dimension, courtesy of Gee Oh Dee. Time works quite differently in both the heavenly and hellish realms, and while Charley is aware of the exact number of years, days, minutes and seconds that have passed, she has no clue what that translates to in the mortal realm. Lucky for her, it’s not an exorbitant amount of time. Unluckily, demons and hell on earth wait for no one and before she knows it, she’s back solving cases and trying to get to the heart of a plague that has demonic ties.
Summoned to Thirteenth Grave was really a story of goodbye, and that was certainly a focal point throughout this book. Every single character of note was present in this book and while some appearances were as simple as a few words exchanged, others were told of their destiny in the battle between Satan and the Sentry. Because yes, that battle is still on the horizon, and yes, Beep is still at the center of it all. Along with everyone’s favorite Daeva, of course, and a few new and surprising additions to the Sentry.
There were plenty of surprises and twists thrown into this final book, almost like Darynda was holding out on us and saving the best for last. Not only that, but Charley has finally learned the history of her mother’s death — the history that everyone around her kept under a layer of secrecy, only divulging the basics. This was such an emotional book, not simply because it’s the final installment, but also because there’s loss, past and present, and every seemingly small thread tied to those losses were explored and given a bit of closure. Jones has never been afraid to put her characters (and readers!) through the emotional wringer, but she definitely outdid herself with this one.
I’ve heard word of a spin-off, and I’m certainly hoping that comes to fruition in the future. This story can’t be finished, and I’m not just saying that because I can’t let go. The biggest battle hasn’t yet happened, the prophecies haven’t yet been realized, and there are so many current characters who have been given a place in the Sentry, thanks to Charley’s ability to see parts of the future. So while Reyes’ and Charley’s arc may have come to a close, I have hope that it isn’t truly the end. Just a break while Beep grows up.
Bottom line — phenomenal series ender, with plenty of room left to revisit the world and (some) of the characters. Many series questions have found a conclusion, while many others have not, and I’m hopeful that a spinoff happens sooner rather than later. Highly recommend the entire series, and I’ll certainly be rereading the series in the future.

One good thing is that the author knew when to close out and let go. She knew when to end her series. The writer did not keep milking it and milking it. She ended the series with dignity and flair. I wish other writers would learn to do that. Knowing when to end is one of the most important aspects of this sort of thing. Fo me, the ending of a story is more important than any other part. What i mean is that a bad ending can absolutely ruin a good story. Really, a great story beginning is good, so is a great middle, but a bad ending can totally cancel all that out. Ms Jones did not disappoint.
I started this journey at book one. I picked up an on sale audio book for a long drive. I enjoyed it so much that I bought book number two. Then I continued all the way through to the end.
Such wit and humor. I loved the witty chapter beginnings. The short memes and t-shirt sayings. I actually do want some of those T-shirts. Ms Jones should sell those T-shirts. LOL.
I loved the appearances of Angel and the Bandits. Artemis totally cracks me up. Strawberry Shortcake was priceless. Rocket and Blue were such unexpected characters. The plot twist were also great. Nice.
I liked one of the early books where a detective ghost kept showing up when she was in the shower. Pretending that he could not see her. Or did not notice her. Their interactions were hysterical.
Or the time when Strawberry Shortcake was going to cut her hair. Please read for yourself to find out what happens. It was so funny. :)
Another funny episode from an earlier book was when Charlie was frowning as she was wrestling with a concept she was trying to grasp, she almost caught it, then it got away. I still laugh at that one. I am laughing at that right now.
I loved the time when Charlie was first imet the motorcycle gang. It was hysterical. Especially the part where Charlie was sneaking on the property, trying to be cool, and wound up rolling around because she hurt her knee. Then she got stuck in the window. Too funny.
Finally, I loved, loved, loved, the audio versions. The audio narrator did an outstanding job. For example, while I have already read the written version of the current book, the audio version is so well done that I am listening to it too. I listen as I drive.
I so enjoyed all these books! So much fun. So many surprises. I enjoyed every moment of it. I just may need to read this series all over again. What a great writer. Thanks

I won't rehash the plot here, but this book is definitely one to read once you have read ALL the others in this series. I especially loved the ending and can't wait to see what Darynda Jones has up her sleeve for us all now!

I have been invested and in love with this series since I read the first book. I loved Charley and her humour and the love she has for her friends and family. I was sad when I learnt this was going to be the last book, but when I read the last page, I knew there had to be more to it. I hope there is a sequel coming from Beep's pov, that will feature Oshi, Amber and all the other gang.
I hope that Reyes and Charley can come back and be with their daughter when she grows up, to help in the fight somehow.
I have loved this series and I am sad it has ended, but the ending did not disappoint, if only it made me anxious that a sequel won't be wrote.
Happy reading :)

Each book was an emotional journey on a roller-coaster that you thought would be just a couple of loops. Then you start realising as you make you way through the books that maybe you have taken a roller-coaster with more loops than expected but that's alright because its a fun and exhilarating ride.
But buy book thirteen you suddenly realise your on the highest and fastest emotional roller-coaster with so many loops you have lost grip of what is up and what is down. With so many twists and turns your heart feels like it's permantly lodged in your throat and you can't see for all the water drowning your eyeballs.
But went it comes to a stop that no longer matters because you just want to stay on and go through it all again.
