Review

"GP Hutchinson's inventive romp cleverly pairs a shrewd police detective with a wronged sumo champion who must prove himself as sure-footed outside the ring as in--or perish trying." --Barry Lancet, bestselling author of JAPANTOWN and TOKYO KILL

From the Author

I've had a lifelong infatuation with Japan--since long before recent art forms made fascination with the country a pop culture phenomenon. Over the years books by Stephen Turnbull, James Clavell, Dale Furutani, and Erik Haugaard--all set in Japan--fueled my enthusiasm and my imagination. As a World Geography instructor I taught about Japan for many years. Japanese food, clothing, music, art, architecture, and history all captivate me.

A few years ago I enjoyed my first opportunity to personally visit Japan. I wondered whether I would return home more in love with the country than ever or disenchanted by what I encountered. It was definitely the former. And thankfully I've had the privilege of returning and spending more time with delightful Japanese friends, exploring both the traditional and the trendy aspects of their homeland.

Meanwhile who doesn't like a good story? High adventure. Heroes with heart. Escalating danger from unexpected quarters. Setting such a tale in the colorful and exotic world of Japan, what I came up with was Sumotori--a thriller in which our improbable, yet instantly likable hero finds himself in trouble from the get-go. As he struggles to overcome the forces arrayed against him, I'm betting you'll be caught up in the action too and at the same time enthralled by the striking backdrop of  modern-day Japan--chic, yet steeped in ancient ritual.

I hope you enjoy Sumotori: A 21st Century Samurai Thriller.

Interesting storyline involving sumo wrestlers. Most unusual. Did not know much about the sport and this little book gave quite a bit of interesting information. Story is quite simple but still entertaining with some twists here and there. Worth reading for an good, easy read.

If you have ever been to Japan or have any knowledge of Sumo then you will enjoy this book. It has some terms in Japanese that are explained but it is kind of like reading subtitles or footnotes. It kind of breaks your concentration when you are in the story. While the story is fiction the situations with the characters are real. They follow some events that have happened in the past few years. As I have said, you have to follow Sumo. Would I recommend the book? Not to everyone, but I enjoyed it enough to give it 5 stars and most will enjoy it.

I chose this rating because the book has several interesting aspects. The characters are believable, story line good, easy to follow and most of all I learned a lot about Japan. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good read.

A great story about Japan's national sport, Sumo Wrestling. A modern day thriller that has its roots in a contest dating back mAny centuries. An excellent depiction of the history and captivating story of conflict to save the integrity of a long standing national sport.
Excellent Read,

One thing I like about reading, is "traveling" through the books I read. The author of Sumotori: A 21st Century Samurai Thriller does a great job of painting descriptive word pictures. I felt like I was on the scenes for every bit of the action. Loved the characters... Loved the surprises... and loved how he wrapped up everything at the end. So much fun to read !!!

Fast paced thriller! If you like action and suspense, you must read this novel. I'm not someone very interested in Japanese culture, but the author does an amazing job of making it interesting without the extensive history and geography lessons that other authors are so inclined to overload novels with. I read this one in one sitting! Looking forward to the next one!

Never read a book set in Japan before, but it was totally captivating. The fast pace keeps you turning the pages and before I knew it I was half way through the book. The heroes and the villains play their part to the fullest to the very end. The author paints a vivid picture of the settings and the people and brings in bits of history here and there in the story. All in all a very good read for most people who enjoy fiction. Don't let the setting keep you from putting this book on your short list for future readings.

Believable characters, fast pace, just enough suspense, unexpected twists and turns, and a satisfying ending all make this a great read. GP Hutchinson has woven a tale worthy of the likes of Grisham and Larsen. You don't have to have an interest in Japanese culture or Sumo wrestling to find this a very enjoyable book, but you may find yourself doing some research on these topics after reading "Sumotori". Highly recommended, even to young readers because of the lack of overt sex and bad language that seems to run rampant in today's media.
