Good Mix for Phalaenopsis!

I was disappointed with other orchid mixes in the past but I like this orchid mix! The pieces of this mix tend to be more chunky which makes it good or bad depending on the type of orchids you have and the climate. If you need more moisture keep in mind that you can always add some sphagnum moss to your mix. This specific mix without adding anything to it worked perfectly for my phalaenopsis orchids. One thing to note is that if you got an orchid that comes in one of those smaller plastic pots (purchased at grocery store such as trader joes, ralphs, wholefood, etc.) and they packed all the roots in those tiny pots then you might want to change your pot to give the roots more room to breath. Transfer them to a bigger pot this way you can also add this mix (pick the smaller pieces if the big ones are still too big for your pot). You can always use the bigger pieces for the bottom of your pots. Don't forget to keep the roots that were out of the initial pot to be out of your new pot. Four Key Points: 1) orchid's roots need to breathe and dry out between waterings (think of it as an air plant, it takes moisture from the air not from wet soil; they love humidity but the roots can't be wet 24/7) 2) water the roots, NEVER the crown (if water is lodged in the crown and doesn't dry out quickly it will cause the crown to rot; DO NOT mist your orchid) 3) If you have your orchid in a plastic pot inside a ceramic pot, make sure the plastic pot has holes, if it doesn't you can always make them yourself. 4) Don't use ice to water your orchid (they are tropical plants; they don't like the cold)

Happy medium makes happy orchids!!!! I had never been a plant person. I received an orchid for my birthday and then after that, somehow, I had three more orchids in my apart.. One of them died and I had no idea why. Long story short, when you buy an orchid in a surpermaket, most of them have been potted in moss. This keeps them moist until they are sold, but shortly thereafter when you take them home their roots will start to rot and your orchid will never re-bloom or worst die. HOW TO AVOID THIS? Repot your orchid in a happy medium that allows maximum drainage. I repotted all my orchids with this potting mix which has bark, charcoal and coarse perlite and now my orchids are healthy looking plants (I like to add moss to this mix to help with moisture because it's too dry in here during the winter).By Raven D. on March 31, 2017

The moment I opened the product I found mites all over the area of my plants.
At first I thought it was strange and that is why my plants were not doing well until I realized... the bugs were coming from the bag itself.
I cleaned the area through out the product... BUT TO NO HELP!!! A month later my kitchen sink was infested with mites. I called an exterminator he came but the bugs came back, called him back again and yes the bugs are back!!
So I repeat do not buy this product unless you want a mite infestation.
P.S. I called the company and left a message and no one called me back.

I have been skeptical about big-company bagged mixes like this since I have gotten mixes that went moldy on me in 3 days, mixes infested with fungus gnats, mixes advertised as being "for orchids" when they were actually dirt, (and so on) from other companies.
However, this was reasonably priced and I thought I would give it a shot since I really needed to repot. I was pleasantly surprised to find a clean, chunky, nice mix. I have repotted several orchids in this mix and they are doing just fine. The mix is a bit splintery as you get to the bottom of the bag, but really I can just put it through a little mesh and filter out the small tiny bits.
I would say that this is so chunky that it would be best for cattleyas and phalaenopsis orchids. Maybe dendrobiums as well. However, this would not be a good mix for oncidiums (especially miltonias) or paphiopedilums and phragmipediums. Depending on your climate, you can mix in sphagnum moss to your taste to give the mix a more moisture-retentive quality.
I will absolutely buy from this company again. If you are a fellow orchid grower, you know how precious our little plant babies are to us, and I want to put my stamp of approval on this mix as a fellow orchid grower!

Spiders inside and my orchids are sick now

Afte repotting two of my orchids using this, they stated to get yellow. My old and whealth orchid is losing its leaves. My orchids didn't have any infection and I am not overwatering, so that makes me believe that the product is not good. Also, I found some little spiders inside the bag. I am so disappointed!
